As a Nikon DSLR owner and frequent user. I was considering getting a Coolpix has a backup and as an everyday carry around camera. I like to 'shoot' landscapes, flowers and foliage which I come across when I'm out and about.
After many many times looking at Coolpix cameras it suddenly occurred to me that Coolpix cameras don't have a viewfinder.
They only use the LCD for viewing. Is this true (?), I'll stick with my P&S.
Pentony, I have and use a Nikon Coolpix P-7000. It has a view finder as well as a Monitor screen. Has almost all of the features of a full DSLR with the exception of changeable lens.
captures in Raw and has PSAM. I paid about $400 for mine.

The 7000 is my bridge camera as well. I would have preferred something smaller but none of the compacts have a viewfinder any longer and in bright sunlight the LCD screen is useless. I also have an older Canon SD1100 that is pocket sized and does have a viewfinder..one of the last they made that small. Takes excellent pictures..you might want to look for one.
My wifes Coolpix P90 has both a view finder ans a LCD screen. A great little camera.
The coolpix L cameras do not have viewfinders.Coolpix P cameras, Most of them do...
I have a coolpix P80 - has BOTH a viewfinder and LCD screen (2 x 2 1/4 in) and you can toggle between them pretty easily.
This camera was a replacement for a beloved Minolta I dropped (ugh!) and it takes the sweetest photos (truest color) I've ever taken!
I have the P500 and it has the view finder. The coolpix line is big and covers a lot of sizes, the small ones don't have the viewfinder. I think only the "P" line has it
