My Canon 20D's shutter no longer operates properly. I keep getting error 99. Canon no longer repairs this model and I cannot get the program to show me the number of shutter operations to see if that might be the problem. I have tried to upgrade the software but it will not install properly.
Any suggestions?
Perhaps its time to upgrade the camera to a newer model in the canon series. 60D are very reasonable and a quality camera. Time to open the purse strings just a little.

Canon 20D is a great camera I still have a 10D as back up, but you need to realize they are worth very little 2nd hand so repair is really uneconomic, you need to think about replacement

This is true, I have a 30D which I use mostly for taking images to be used for time lapse videos and if it's day ever comes I won't be looking to repair it.

I still use a D60 for a sidekick to my 50D. If I can't afford to upgrade to a newer model I will be looking to repair my D60 if the cost is reasonable.
Ha ha ha.. The Canon people said the same thing, out of date no longer serviceable, buy another one. He did give me a deal to buy new with a 20% discount. Just having trouble on which one. As I say I am no pro but I do like taking pictures and experimenting with them.
@ Georgeretired - got a set of pliers? lol
@ BigBear - The site says $90.95? Sounds too good to be true. But if it works it would make for a good backup camera. I will call them on Monday. Thank you.
@ Gifted One, looked at the link. I believe my 20D had more features but still checking it out. Thank you.
Thank you all for the FAST responses. I like this site.

Check out KEH.com they do repairs and it will be like buying a refurbished one from someone else. They also sell used. Just compare their cost of repairs and add your cost to ship to them and don't forget about ins. also.
You can even call them and talk about the problem. They have a great customer service. They also have a quick turnaround.
Make sure your battery and lens contacts are clean on camera as well as battery and lens.

Google "Canon camera Error 99" and you'll likely find your answer to this generic error message - battery, memory card, or lens contacts are most likely the culprit.
try a soft pencil eraser to clean contacts on lens and body and the battery contacts. If your lucky that will correct the 99 code.
You can also look on craigslist for a 20D- 40Ds for sale. You should be able to pick up a body for the same cost as what Canon would charge for a repair.

This is the best advice you can get. How old is your battery?
Take a Q-tip and a drop of rubbing alcohol. Clean all electrical contacts thoroughly but do not place wet alcohol on anything else. Reformat your memory card. Put fresh battery in again and turn it on. Let's see what happens.
I have a pentax zxl i've had for twelve years and a mamiya 645 super for eight years, both are working perfectly.
I've been watching post's on UHH and after seeing digital cameras developing major problems after such a relatively short time, I will stay with film as long as it is availale.
When I had this problem charged and NEW battery and the problem when away
