Hi well i bought of these out here in Australia, last year. known here as a 600d, same lenses, and as far i am concerned, they are ok, i traveled around Aus in our caravan, and got some real good shots, NOW i must admit the lenses are not the best, but i would say to you they are much better than P and S, DO as i am doing, learn your camera, what your lenses will do. then ,and only then upgrade to what you need, and can afford, dont forget you can spend
an arm and a leg, on lenses, good luck, and travels,

Have you considered Canon Refurbished? I buy from them all of the time and am completely happy. Saves you money and this option gives you a longer lens, 75-300mm. You can pick up a bag and memory card by searching the net that will save money as well. Gary

I am about to take the jump from P&S to DSLR. I'm really excited but it is hard to make decisions when I have no experience and limited knowledge! I was so happy to find this group and I have really been enjoying my time here and I'm excited seeing the wonderful photos you take! I have decided on a Canon T3i body for sure. I just got an ad from SAMs Club that they have a kit with the body and two lenses, EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Type II and EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS, battery and charger and a bag and 8 GB card. I checked in the store and this kit is $749. The coupon is for $100 off. So, if they don't raise the price before next week, this kit should be $650. This sounds too good to be true.....is the camera from SAMs just the same as from a camera shop? Thoughts and opinions? I know these aren't the very best lenses but can I be happy with them as a beginner and then decide what else I want? Thanks for all your help! Sorry if this is too long!

It is a great deal for what I checked on Amazon. My brother, a dear friend and I own this camera. We are very happy with it.
You will need the following:
Canon Rebel T3i / 600D (video course) $49.00
Join John Greengo for an in-depth step-by-step tour of the Canon Rebel T3i (known in Europe as the Cannon EOS 600D). With a hands-on introduction to your camera's operations, detailed instructions on how all the menus work, and instruction on how to shoot great photos with this specific camera model.

You want to store as much as you can but you do not want to place all your images on 1 card, because if it fails then....you and I do not want to know how it really feels.
You have the option of 8gb, 16gb, 32gb, 64gb and 128gb
To give you an idea: I own two 32gb cards. Each holds over 1,000 images (RAW and JPEG).

I think smaller cards are better. 8 is plenty and doesn't take as long to load on the computer.

The $650 would definitely be a competitive price. I see that Best Buy has the body with 18-55 mm lens for $600. And I know you can get the other lens for around $130 - $175. Does Sams Club have the same return policy as Costco? 30 days on cameras, no questions asked? Just in case you hate it. :)
Here is a link to a dragonfly photo I took with the t3i.

The time required to load on your computer is more closely due to the card's speed rating than it's capacity (unless the entire card is filled and I, personally, never shoot that many images on a card,)

Thanks for the welcome and for all your suggestions! I like the 55-250 lens better than the 75-300 because it has the image stabilization built in. It is harder to find this lens in a kit for a discount! I already have lots of memory cards, I use my P&S a LOT! Thanks for the suggested tutorials, I have been looking at some, it's nice to have an actual recommendation from a real person! I looked at the refurbs and it would cost more with that additional lens and have less warranty. I keep looking, it's a long wait to next Wed. To see if it is actually going to be $650. I didn't really look at the t4i much, with 24 pixels those photos will take up a lot of computer space....don't want to have to upgrade that! I woul love to have the auto focus on video though!

I think my cards are high speed class 8 or 10, yeah more than 8 for most is likely excessive.
I own that camera and those lenses (my first DSLR lenses given to me by my husband!). They are great, especially if you are just starting out. I still use those "kit" lenses and love the 18-55mm for wide angle shots. The T3i is wonderful and at 18mp you can't go wrong. It does more than you could every possibly and mostly likely want to do! Also has hi-def (HD) video capabilities...and I would say that price is VERY good...and Sam's Club can be trusted.
Not so worried about the time to load, but the amount of space it takes on the hard drive. I have a Mac and I was told that I wouldn't be able to organize my photos for use with an external drive. Is that just if I use iPhoto or Aperature? If I got Photoshop Elements could I store externally and be able to view my photos in the folders I created? (Hope you understand what I am saying) I don't want to deal with thousands of photo files that aren't organized in folders.
When I bought my 5100 I could have save money by not paying tax by buying if from B&H. I decided to buy the camera from rebutial camera store for the reason that if there is something I don't understand about the camera workings I will have someone to turn to. until I really understood all of the funtions I was at the camera store quit ofthen. When you buy a camera from a place like Sams club you might save $100, but have no one to turn to. you get what you pay for

Thanks for the reassurance! Now for the long wait until Wed. When the sale starts!

I totally agree, and would love to buy from our local store. They don't carry a package with these lenses so it would cost me $899. B&H would be $749 because they have a discount on the extra lens. I think I will go to the local store to see if they would honor the B&H price. They already told me they could probably work in a camera bag and I have several SD cards already so don't really need that.
Great camera, great buy, great lenses. You will probably never need any other lenses.
