Anhinga Fishing

This past Sunday I was watching this anhinga fishing in the marsh pond.
At one point it caught a small fish then dropped it while trying to flip the fish for head down swallow. The anhinga re-caught the fish and this time was successful doing the patented anhinga fish flip.
When he was done fishing he hopped onto a nearby stump to dry his wings.

What a beautiful series!
Something I see quite often but when I go to shoot the birds always turn their backs to me....little buggers!
Really nice captures.

Awesome! anhingas make me laugh. They are such funny looking birds. When you look at a giraff or see an anhinga you know that God has a sense of humor. Thanks for posting

It seems the cormorants do that turn their back thing on me when they catch a fish more then the anhingas which is good because I would rather photograph the anhingas anyway.
Thanks and glad you like these pics!

Thanks! The anhinga fish flip is probably my #1 favorite bird action to see and photograph.
Many examples of this can be seen on my blog here:

They are kind of goofy birds, probably not quite as goofy as the cormorants but close.
However the anhingas are deadly fishing birds and that spear fishing action is quite exciting.

Thanks for checking these out, much more here:

Great shots, as usual SG. Love it when they flip the fish

Interesting set SG.
Whole bird shot looks best to me.
I'd crop No3 in portrait which I think would help with composition.
