Happy with it have a Tamron 18-270 on it.More than satisfied with the photos. Don't have any fancy program use the Nikon one for cropping etc. My friend has the D7000 and when we compare photos don't see much difference between the 2 cameras.

I've had this camera for about 8 months. I love it. For the price it is a good deal. Still lots to learn but I also needed a camera that could shoot hi resolution images, 300 to 350 dots per inch, for sending out to printers for brochures, posters etc.
This camera for the price is a good deal.
I am not a fan of the manuals that come with cameras. The first thing I did was order Nikon D3200 for Dummies. The type is larger and I like how everything is explained. It's more user friendly.
Here is a picture taken at the dog park. I take my dog there almost every day. She gets to run and I get to practice action shots.
The deer photo was not planned. I was driving down a country road and spotted a herd of deer and quickly took this shot. I was about 20 yards away. I was amazed that I could even see the whiskers on its face.
So I feel the more you practice the happier you will be with this camera.

Thank you for your responses. This is my first Nikon (previous Canon user) and I know I have a lot to learn about this camera and its capabilities. I'm looking forward to it.

I bought the D3100 a while back, if I knew the D3200 was coming out shortly after, I would have waited. The D3200 is a much better camera for only a few hundred more. You'll be happy with it.

I have a D3100. Very similar to the 3200 and I love it. The 3200 is an improved 3100. One of the best changes they made was to move the video record button up near the shutter release. Watch out for the memory card access door. As you take your hand off the camera, it's easy to pop it open, and it can break easily. Not uncommon on the 3100. Excellent camera.

IMHO the manuals that come with cameras are written with the assumption that one is already familiar with it. Often referring to things that one has to search for elsewhere in the manual, to understand.

Books, such as you mention, do not make this assumption and often give 'step by step' instructions.

As you say, practice changing settings, and also trying different settings with different light conditions. Then when you see something you want to photograph, you will have a good starting point.

I too think that the manuals supplied give the impression is that you all ready have knowledge about the camera. Bought the "Dummy" book for my Nikon and learned a lot more than from the Nikon manual.

Go to your local book store and buy a book about the D3200. A book dedicated to that camera will tell you a lot more than your manual can.
