The jewelry stores had this figured out a long time ago - turn the price tags over so no one will know until (hopefully) they have decided they want something!

Right! You see a nice item that might cost $100, but when you call the salesman over, have him find the keys, open the cabinet, remove the tray, remove the item, turn over the tag - it's $1,000. Kinda discourages someone from inquiring.

If a vendor hides a price, they are ashamed of it (choose another vendor or a different product); If they are proud of the price it is displayed all over the place (probably very competitive).

Sometimes the specifications change as you click too !!!

Watch for the " expect delivery in XXX months after placing order" or even " an equal value substitute may be sent ..... "

Actually an equal value substitution is NOT legal unless they inform you this is what is being done and give you the opportunity to cancel the order. Sending something other than what you placed the order for, regardless of value, without your knowledge or consent and expecting you to pay for it is consumer fraud. They get away with this stuff because people simply accept it. If I ordered WIDGET A and was shipped WIDGET B then was told it is the same price and similar features after waiting 2 weeks and expecting WIDGET A I would NOT be happy and the item would be immediately returned.

Many times they are counting on you not wanting to invest in the repackaging and return shipping cost.

Funny you should say that. A friend just got a new printer, and she doesn't like it, but she says it's too much trouble packing it and shipping it. That's where Amazon is good. They let you print a label, and you either bring it to UPS or have them pick it up.

I hate when the secret pricing is so secret that you have to put it in your "cart" before you find out what they want to charge you. grrrrrr

I have had sites refuse to tell me the shipping charges unless I complete the order. When this happens I simply leave the sight. Sale lost for them ...........
I know what UPS would charge and some companies milk it.
I was searching for a good price on a toslink cable for my stereo.
Most wanted around $20. Found it for $9.99 but when I went to place the order the shipping was $18. The other sites were only around $6. It is too bad these website companies attempt to screw their customers.

Shipping prices are definitely one to watch.. Some sites advertise items with free shipping yet when you come to complete the order you find the shipping options box already ticked on the most expensive option and that cost already filled in on the order form. It's too easy to overlook this j and just click "confirm order" only to find out the shipping is costing you a bomb... And VAT is another one to watch.. many firms advertise the cost less VAT.. and it's only when you get to finalise the order you find that 20% VAT has been added..

I received an email ad for a portable scanner. I had to click to four different screens before I got the price. I was ready to quit after click #3, but I thought I'd see how far I had to go. Generally, the more they make you click, the more expensive the item is.

Yes, hate that too. Usually with each click there is a new hook to keep you going. Like the telephone cold callers, gets boring very quickly. If not on the home or main ad page I bin them.

Jerry,
A new trick that's being used is for product ads to contained a downloadable video clip or direct you to further links. When using IE as a search engine, this can leave your computer vulnerable to adware that gets embedded that is attached to the video clip download. Therefore, to prevent such embedding, it is recommended to use either the AVG prescreen or the Firefox prescreen search engines which warn you of embedded attachment for any internet downloads, but do not give warning if you are redirected through a link.. Encoded links from sites can also lead to viral infection of unwanted malware. The use of IE leaves huge possibility of infection since it has numerous methods for virus or malware to be inadvertantly installed. Just a word to the wise.
