Does anyone have any comments on the sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG macro lens for canon?

You might try putting your question in the "search" feature above and see what the Hogs have said on this subject.
jmd, I shoot Canon also Rebels & 60 D. I started about where your profile shows you. I traded up 18-135 and wanted more quality in longer lens also. Looking back both of the kit lenses are more than good. Any way I look at Sigma for several of lens needs. The Sigma was allot less money as I recall as compared with Canon 70-300 non L IS. Long story short Canon ran a sale on that lens refurbished and I have been using it for several month. I love it. Several friends have both L and non L lenses. Weight and flexablity seems to determine what is used.
PM if you need more specific.

I have it for my T3i, very nice lens, great for back yard bird shooting, Good on distance and good crisp photos. Good bang for the buck. But I would get the: Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DG OS SLD; the OS being the key image stabilization for handheld shots. if only on tripod then get the less expensive model: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
I have the Nikon version and it has been a good lens. After the initial learning curve I have not had any trouble hand holding, in fact most of the time I use it hand held. Having never used a lens with OS I can't say that the shots wouldn't have been better with it.

I Have the sony version. great clean shots, however can hunt about a bit on low contrast subjects. I use it mostly with a tripod.
I have the 70-300 f4-5.6 DG for Canon. I must use a tripod with it. I can not hand hold it especially at the 300 range. It's not a bad lens for the money.
Hi jmd.
I have had the same lens for over a year now and although it is for my Nikon D3100, it is a great lens....sharp as a tack. Had a wee problem with 'soft' pix but discovered this was caused by a cheap UV protection filter. Bought a more expensive Hoya and problem solved. Buy this lens....you'll love it.
Happy snapping.
