We went over this in the Nikon Seminar. The vertical lines are reflective of the nature of the photo. It may be a photo that is primarily dark, and will have primarily vertical lines on the left. A lighter photo will have primarily vertical lines towards the right and mid-tones will be in the middle. A GOOD exposure, however, according to the Nikon instructors, will have a histogram that stretches all the way from left to right and covers the entire spectrum, of course without that blown out vertical peak on the complete right. It is possible, however, if you see that the bulk of the vertical lines are to the left, to change the exposure and move them more center. However, just moving them to the middle does not make it a better photo. Both may be good exposures.

don't know if this was brought up. on the histogram which is better when the peak is at the center or on the right or left?

First there is not one right histogram. Where the peak(s) are depends on the subject being photographed. The consensus is to expose to the right without touching the edge which gives you more latitude to play with in post processing

there is no correct answer to this question as there is no "better" histogram shape.

A histogram only shows you the "distribution of tonal values" in your shot. Shape means nothing.

The answer is YES. It really depends on the tonal range of the scene you are photographing and what you are trying to convey in your image. No easy answer to this question.

Funny, I tried that and the first Google listing brought me right back to this thread. :-D Yes, the search function here will give you every post that ever mentioned histogram in the last 1 1/2 years. Google makes it easier to narrow the search.

the way I like it is not so much bright white that looks over exsposed. can easily brighten the dark areas

This will give you a much better list that you can quickly search through and narrow down what you are looking for. I've never been impressed with this site's search feature. Fortunately, Google indexes everything. :-)

Great suggestion!

I was taught "the right is bright." Avoid that, as it's impossible to process "blown out" areas of the photo.

Very good suggestion. I have often done a Google search and been led right back here.
