If you hear some VERY loud noises overhead and see what looks like tracers headed down in your direction, you should assume you've done something wrong and head out !!! Just sayin' !!!

Be sure and grab your camera on the way out!

There are plenty of pictures taken and posted of the Blue Angels -- at least there were before sequestration. At Keesler AFB they recited a list of things on base which I could not photograph; foremost, anything on the flight line.

The Angels are grounded right now, won't be to much longer they will be back. The sequestration on the military is about to be lifted in spite of Congress.
If your wanting to get military shots yourself just east of Mobile on 98, as soon as you come out of the tunnels a friend of mine John Word has a Motel and behind it is a military Air museum. It's right there at the Battleship Alabama. Last time I was there he had a large collection, John has a SR-71 Blackbird and about 20 or so others. You can shoot as much as you want there. The Navy Air Museum in Pensacola is about 45 miles on down the road. The military has a large presence all along the coast.

Thanks UP-2-IT. I was at that hangar several years ago. The planes, the USS Alabama, and the bay should provide plenty to shoot. Now, if it would just stop raining. I get to P'cola pretty often and was going to check out photo ops at the Naval base, but after hearing all of Keesler's restrictions I haven't been in a big hurry to check it out. I'll have to find that museum, though. The Gulf coast has plenty of beautiful scenery to shoot, but I'm kinda thinking I have enough seagulls. They photo bomb everything!

when they first started to show the F117 at air shows they had the sign Deadly Force Authorized, but only if you cross the barrier. take all the pics you want just dont try to get close

Many, many years ago, I was at an air-show at the now defunct Mather AFB in Rancho Cordova, CA. They had an SR-71 "Blackbird" there, surrounded by yellow tape and the ubiquitous, "Deadly Force Authorized" signs. A toddler broke away from her mother and ran under the tape. Immediately, two guards unslung their AR-15's. Fortunately, an officer inside the perimeter ran to the child and led her back to the horrified mother. He then took the opportunity to "debrief" the guards. I and a local news photographer got good photos of the guards starting to aim at the child. If the guards had shot, their bullets would have hit and penetrated or missed the child and hit other innocent civilians. I understand that now such "secret" aircraft have sensitive views blocked, use wire cages and controlled access, and the guards carry Tasers. That little girl is probably grown up now. I wonder if she has any idea how close she (and probably others) came to death that Saturday. I can just see the headlines now, "Terrorist Suicide Toddler Foiled; Dozens Killed and Injured!" By the way, the local paper never ran that photo; I wonder why not!

There's no restriction on pictures. Anything you're taking pictures of, the other side already knows about. Snap away!

I'm retired AF and would like to point out the many air shows that have been held on military bases across the country. Take pictures. If the miitary doesn't want you to take pictures, you won't see the plane. Unfortunately, due to cutbacks, these air shows are probably a thing of the past.

And that's a shame.

Back in the circa mid 80's I was traveling on I-10 about 6-6:30am, sun had risen over the eastern mountains, to Pheonix and by the Evergreen air facility (old CIA and Air America facility also) an air craft did an almost 90° bank coming across I-10 and nosed dived into the desert behind a slight rise. By the time I got to see behind the rise, a few seconds, - Nothing. Oh and if you look there are no runways for that plane to land on (IN SIGHT at least.) That is another subject, that air port.

Turns out it was the stealth bomber. Not the fighter, the bomber. I was so close I could see two people sitting in it, because it was around 50 ft off the ground. They were probably trying to get it out of the sky before a Russian satilite came over head. If I had a camera, probably would have been shot for taking pictures of it.

So sometimes secret plane do fly and the ones they don't want you to know about.

We see quite a few military aircraft flying over. Anybody know, for certain, the rules on photographing military aircraft? I'm guessing it might depend on detail, such as ID numbers, or specific equipment on the aircraft. BUT, maybe being in public airspace, it doesn't matter.

What about posting. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some hard-core rules on that, especially if Public viewable.

there is nothing that says you can't photograph military aircraft at all while in the air. That is public airspace. But on a military base might have that is another subject national security involved there.

Everything's legal until they catch you. And if you have a good lawyer, it's still legal.

As long as you are shooting with a 50mm lens on a Canon and not a 50mm cannon, I don't think they could care less. That cat is already out of the bag when they fly over your house.

Here's a good one: Back in the 60's Revell came out with a totally accurate model of the SR 71 even before the plane was made public. The Pentagon was furious! I guess those folks at Jane's don't pay much attention to those warning signs. Lol.

I take em at Mc Guire and at air shows all the time. I would definitely recommend to leave the camera home if in the Roswell area.
