Thanks for your responses, Hogs! From what I've gathered here, there's good grunge and crummy grunge. It's time for me to at least look for the differences and learn how to create a high-end, high-key look ... just in case I'm asked.

Photography is first and foremost Art. How the artist 'sees' the shot and executes it is his/her vision. Who are we to say it does not adhere to some 'standard' that someone made up a long time ago, so it's not a good photograph.

It's like Music, what the kids listen to today I don't understand, and don't care for, but it is what they like and so be it.

I have a friend that is a pro photographer, he does very well, but I bet most on this board would think his photos are not up to par. He does art, and then photographs it, not trying to make art out of a photo. ( I wish I had his creative talent)

All of us see things just a bit different, and it's a good thing we do, for would be a boring world if we all thought exactly the same.

I like the high key effect but the dark bikini straps are a distraction. There ought to be a true black in the image but it should be a feature of the girl (for example, her pupils) and not on her clothing.

I only take pics for my enjoyment and dont really care what anybody calls anything as it certainly will never influence me. I believe there are good photographs and bad the good i applaud the bad i ignore that particular one i ignore.

No, it's not mine, but the subject is a friend of mine. She's 45 and is absolutely stunning, no matter how the camera is set!

They ate growing up in a world of cell phone cameras, we had the old 110 film cameras. The quality isn't there but for Facebook it's fine. The fad that should go away is Facebook. Kids today use face book as a photo collector I used to use shoe boxes and real albums.

In time it will change again I don't know to what but it will change.

I'll be OLD with you... AND take pride in correct grammar, punctuation and spelling - they have landed me two jobs in the past, one in Holland, one in Canada!
When it comes to photography: I do not like "current fashion", I like to stick with the tried and true. Good exposure, colour and composition.

Now, all of you who do like the different styles of photos, more power to you, as long as you enjoy them! I do appreciate the skill involved in getting the results you get. It's just not my thing!

My young friends in their twenties absolutely love blown out, grungy looking photos. Am I missing something? I work diligently to perfect the color and sharpness in all of my photos. Maybe I just need to push the histograms as far right as possible, add a pp pop of color and call it a day. (These are the same people who have tossed out punctuation marks and teach high school English classes.) Any thoughts? I'm i just ... OLD???

Why would you want to ridicule people who have a different artistic vision than you? Applying your concept, every photo ever taken and yet to be taken should have the exact same quality.
It's remarkable also that you know that these photographers throw out punctuation marks.

I was told by the head of the photography department of a daily newspaper, "there's nothing wrong with a well exposed shot". Of course, we were making photos that had to be "half toned" and that kind of high key image wouldn't have looked like anything when printed in the daily paper.
I don't care for it, but I print what the client wants.

As for the improper use of the English tongue, that is the sort of thing up with which I will not put. (Props to Mr. Churchill)

As a pro, clients hire me for my "look." As to the washed out, grungy look, this used to be called "high key" photography and it is always done for effect. Sometimes, you can mix high key with standard photography to deliver interesting results. High Key, on skin, erases defects like no other process.

The image, here, also benefited from the old school use of creative film processing. Bending the exposure curve through processing techniques is something lost to today's DSLR world. That said, I don't intend to go back to chemicals as I like the fresh smelling world of digital.

As to throwing out punctuation marks, when I went to school, high school that is, one punctuation mistake cost 10 points on a non-curved rigid scale of 100. Typos or misspellings, each, cost 10 points; and a comma, where a period was required, cost 40 points. Finally, the content was graded.

An another answer, is that photography is an art, just like painting. Just as there are many different styles of paintings there are many different styles of photography. One styles no worse than the other. When you look at a painting are photograph it is your eye that decides whether you like it or not. So, you can experiment with different styles and then come up with one that you want to be your own and just stick with that are various style as your mood fits you on that day.
