How does everyone feel about the Nikon 18 to 200 mm lens? Or what lens do you use for a all around lens for shooting landscapes and old mountains and old buildings. Thanks

I used one some time ago and was pretty impressed with the performance, considering the range. Not as sharp as the 70-200 but certainly convenient.

I purchased the Nikon 18 to 200 lens with my D200. Since then I have used it and a Sigma 18 to 250 with my D300s. I purchased the Sigma after a spill while hiking and the Nikon was in the shop to have a broken filter removed and to be checked out and I needed a lens in a hurry. The 250 has some length advantages but it is heavier, doesn't turn the same way to zoom and I think has less contrast than the Nikon lens. I most often use the Nikon lens. It is very versatile if you only want to carry one lens and I have been mostly pleased with the results.
(Sometime the problems were more due to my choices than the lens)
I also have the Nikon 70-200 mm 2.8 lens. This is a wonderful lens. Very sharp, good in lower light and excellent contrast. However, it is heavier and bigger than my Nikon 80-400 mm lens. It also costs a lot more than the 18 to 200 and doesn't cover the same range. Nikon has a sale in March and after thinking about it for a few years, I bought the lens. Currently, this is my absolute favorite lens but the choice of a lens depends on your purpose and your wallet. I still carry the 18 to 200 depending on what I plan to do. I have a Tokina wide angle 11 to 16 but do not have an alternative zoom for intermediate ranges and have some reservations about the Nikon 24 to 70 lens.

I used it on my D7000 - no complaints. When I got a D600, I got the Nikon 28-300mm.

He was asking for PERSONAL opinion, not just another idiot pointing to a generic review!

For landscapes...mountains...buildings...big wide shots maybe look into a used prime...like a 20...24 something like that.

I like my Nikon 18/200... most criticisms are chauffeur problems... Like BigMaMa you gotta learn it and your limits and compensate for both... IMHO
But I still like my D200 with a 35 F1.4 best... although my D7100 is easier to use and is more forgiving. So it's best to ignore my comments;-)

Started with the D70s and the 18-200, uses it up to and with the D300. Bought the D800 and, dumb me, sold all of my DX gear - BIG mistake. But the 28-300 is its equivalent on the FX and does work on the DX.

I've used the 18-200 on my D90 since 2010 and it has served very well. It has its limitations as most lenses, but you learn to work with them. Moderate distortion at the short end and a little "soft" as you near 200 mm. The answer you want to hear . . . . Yes, I would buy it knowing what I know after 17,000+ images.

18-200 is an excellent lens.

Also consider Nikon 28-300 for full frame bodies or Nikon 18-300 for D-sensor bodies.

I personally use the Nikon 28-300 as a "walking around" lens.

That's a little harsh. You may not like JR, but he has contributed plenty. Ken

I agree with Ken - and I use my 18-200 90% of the time. It's a great lens.
