From time to time I like to print photos on my Canon Pixma MX 870, photos are ok however from day one I have had problems with the Wi-Fi connection to the point where I am ready to toss the printer. Any suggestions for a creditable home photo printer with wi-fi capability and no "communication problem occurred" messages ?

Epson XP605 also prints cd/DVDs
I have an Epson Artisan 1430 printer that has been flawlessly over my wireless connection. It also prints directly on CD/DVD discs - a really great feature in my book.

If that's all that's wrong with your printer and you decide to toss it, toss it my way; I'll gladly pay shipping.
Before you give up though, have you considered bluetooth?
I recently purchased the Epson XP-750 and am very impressed with results especially as I got it new for just over £100. A recent magazine gave it a rave review saying it was a Best Buy for photographers.
I have an Epson Artisan 800 and when I tried to print photos wirelessly, they did not come out right. I would load the pictures that I wanted to print on a CF card and inserted it into the printer....much better quality. I have since moved the printer and placed it next to my laptop, connecting it to the laptop with a USB cable. I will also be using a USB cable when I set up my Artisan 1430.

You didn't say if connecting with a usb cable made the output any better... it shouldn't. I haven't had any trouble printing wirelessly since I set up my 1430 over wireless last summer.
I absolutely love the wireless feature which allowed me to place the printer in an enclosed (mostly) dust free cabinet.
If printing from pc to printer is worse than printing from cf card to printer I would take a close look at the software / settings you are using to print the image.

It looks like that's a UK model. Amazon USA has the XP-600, but it doesn't seem to print on DVDs. It looks different, too.
If your only problem is the wireless connection, simply connect your printer to the computer with the cable which came with your printer.
I have a Canon Pixma MG6 250 wifi enabled printer and it works well - sometimes it can be your wireless signal that is the problem - are you getting a high enough broadband.
Currently, I am using a Canon Pixima 3122 printer for all my printing. It does a good job of printing my photos that I have downloaded to my Laptop. It does not have a card reader. Previously, I used an Epson Workforce 600 for my printing needs. It printed well also. It had a card reader. I changed printers because the Epson was not an "air printer" whereas the Canon is. Either Canon or Epson should serve you well.

Sorry, I neglected to say that I get great results now that I'm hooked up by USB cable, too. Some of the problem may have been (when printing wirelessly) that I had the PC on the second floor and the modem and printer in the basement.

Jerry, nice job; more research. Thanks, buddy. We learn something new every day. The 605 is listed by Epson as an EMEAR product only
What does EMEAR stand for? Per:
http://www.acronymfinder.com/Europe,-Middle-East,-Africa,-and-Russia-(EMEAR).html
Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Russia
However, the Epson site also refers to the 600/605. With some differences to the control panel, they do look similar, except - the 600 is black; the 605 is white. However, they may be available in both colors with Epson making the choice to present them is different colors.
Just purchased the Canon Pixma Pro-100 at $399.00 with a $300.00 rebate, can't go wrong and the prints are excellent. That ends the discussion for me! Thanks to all!

The internet connection (broadband) has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with his home networking.
A new neighbor that put in their own access point on the same channel? Most likely.
