DNGs are the Adobe version of a raw file. They are easier to edit in post and are not lossy like a jpeg. Photoshop or Lightroom should be able to save them, but I just use the Nikon raw format, tiff and jpeg.

You can search for RAW - they've been discussed several times.

I routinely convert my raw files to dng while I'm importing them into Lightroom. The one advantage I see is that when you have a raw file, you actually have two separate files. One for the picture and another that goes along with it with the instructions. DNG combines all this information into one file which makes it easier to work with. The other advantage is that Nikon, Canon and the others have their own raw files where DNG can be used with any manufactures raw file. I don't see any change in quality either way, so I opt for the convenience of the dng file.

If you have a raw converter, don't even bother with dng.....

I understand why you say this, however read "The Dam Book" about Digital Asset Management. This book builds a good case for using DNG and also teaches how to use cataloging and Pie software tp your advantage.

After you do everything you want to your raw file you save it as a DNG for it inbeds all the information with the file if you look at your raw file after you make the changes there is a file right under it with an .xmp which has all that information about the retouching you just did and that file has to tag along with the raw file otherwise all your changes are lost.
And DNG files is a smaller file.

The problem I see with .DNG is that with that extension only Abobe can read them. I shoot Nikon whose extension is .NEF which can be read/displayed by any program that reads raw files - including Window XP.

Every camera brand has a different RAW system, and such systems may differ according to model. This means that one models converter may not work with a succeeding model. Of course, Photoshop can open all RAW files.

.DNG can be opened on any computer and with most photo processing software.

It is not quite true that PS can open all RAW files.....it depends on the version of PS you are running.....earlier versions of PS and Bridge do not support newer camera RAW files. This is the crux of the argument for converting to DNG.

DNG files are generally smaller because of better lossless compression and don't require sidecar .xmp files.

A more detailed argument for conversion can be found at:

i don't get it, if i set my pentax to raw i get the choice of dng or pef out of the camera.i can convert dng to tiff or jpeg.the idea of converting jpeg to dng doesn't make sense.i think i'll ignore you guys on this issue, when i shoot in raw i use picasa to view and edit. i can save as jpeg.i have converters for dng and arw.
