You certainly have some freaky (as compared to the rest of the wordl) critters down under. This one looks like a stingerless wasp. Strange since you have so many lethally dangerous things.

This appears to be a gravid (pregnant) wasp, looking for a place to deposit her eggs.

Thanks everyone. The sawdust was fresh from felling an old
diseased gum tree, it looked like"she"was struggling to get free.
She flew away after cleaning her wings with her hind legs. :-D

I think it looks a lot like an adult sawfly. But I'm not that familiar with Australian wasps, so it's just a guess.
