Would like input as to which is the better of the two, "NIK or Photomatix soft hdr?

Better is a relative term. Each creates a different look.
If you want very realistic images and quickly, try Photoengine.
I have Photomatix Pro and LOVE it. I have not used the Nik version, but I have used other Nik products that are also easy to use. So I think you'd be good with either one. Enjoy - HDR is so much fun!
photomatix works for me, you can download a free trial of both programs and try them out.

www.Oloneo.com I like this, there are a lot more things to "tweak" the photo with after you have processed your HDR. You can Download it and try it for a few weeks without paying for it.
Photoengine is the Oloneo product
I chose NIK and am extremely satisfied. They also have a digital noise removal program Define 2 Pro that is excellent at removing digital noise. I also have PtGui that is susposed to combine the HDR and Panoramic functions in one operation. So far I have not had acceptable pictures from it.
