For many of the same reasons I'm hoping Tiger never comes close to Jack's record. However, as far as throwing clubs goes, Lee Trevino advised to throw them up the fairway so you wouldn't have to go backwards to pick them up.

Lee played a tournament in Houston back in 76, they asked him why he didn't have a @1 iron in his bag. As they were about to DQ him he related the story of playing a simple game 2 years prior where he was about to use a #1 for some reason. While he was doing the practice swings prior to hitting the ball there was a sudden crack of thunder and a bolt of lightening hit the #1at thte top of his swing. From that point on Lee never put #1 back in his bag. As the officials were consulting the rule book Lee related the story to them and added the "Even God doesn't use a #1" Lee went ahead and played the tournament.

I looked up the actual quote. Here it is: If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron.

Did they used to dictate which clubs you had to have back then? I had never heard that before.

No, they did not dictate what clubs you had to carry. You were allowed no more than 14 clubs. In fact, very few pros carried the 1-iron because it was so difficult to hit. One player who did carry one from time to time was Jack. Now, with all the fancy hybrid clubs they have out, I suspect even fewer, if any, carry a 1-iron.

I pulled it up from this site, but this is the quote I've seen in books as well.

Here's another site with Trevino quotes that quotes it the same way.

Then why would he have been disqualified for not having a #1 iron?

He wouldn't have been. If however, he had too many clubs, he would have been assessed two strokes per hole for having an extra club. This happened not too long ago, if you remember. Ian Woosnan was in contention for the lead at The Open and had a birdie on the first hole when he discovered he had two drivers in his bag, making fifteen clubs. A birdie became a bogey and it took him out of leading the tournament.

It might interest you folks to know that when Tiger went back to the original spot the ESPN camera had been moved to follow him, and moved again for the second attempt. There was a stationary camera present that was not moved, and shows that Tiger clearly dropped his ball within inches of his original spot. This can be seen here-------------

Scroll down for the side by side shots. As for the comment that Tiger's shot was not near perfect when it hit the flag stick, Tiger, and others, can draw a ball back thirty feet.
Bad luck!
Let's look at the gentleman aspect of this game. Steve was Tiger's caddie for years. Tiger graciously allowed Steve to caddie one time for Adam, however Adam continued to use him, while still under contract to Tiger. Tiger fired Steve for breach of contract, and then Steve, always the gentleman, showed his true colours by bad-mouthing Woods, and used a racial slur at one point.
I try not to let all this crap get in the way of watching human's, with incredible talents, play a tough game.

I understand, however, that what was said was at a Caddy's Award's Dinner which tends to get a bit raucous, and all attending had signed a pledge not to reveal anything that was said. As far as being racist, is it racist just to recognize that a black man has a black arse? Just wondering. Is it racist to call Obama a black President?

No, but a black-assed President, yes.
