Why did you use unnatural effect on your avatar? Some people just like to play with their photos!

I attended a presentation where a guy suggested 1/13 sec is kind of a nice mix if you like reality. It isn't still and it isn't pillowy.

That looks good.

I suppose the milky look is for creating more surreal photographs.

Following this debate with some interest. Not many waterfalls around here but the same issues apply when taking shots of surf and waves on rocks and sand. A rearing foamy wave stopped in its tracks at 1/250th or whatever is hardly 'natural' but I like the look. Must try 1/13 and see what that does...I agree it looks good on the waterfalls and streams.

Frankly I love soft water. And if I want to take pics like that I resent people bitching about it.
Bitch about star trails or car light trails too do you?
And I also love movement water. And also frozen water.
Some of those shots put up as natural don't look real natural to me. When I look at rapids and cascades the white bits don't normally look blown.
And the 1/13th of a second thing is B.S.
It is all dependant on how far away that water is.

LOL that IS funny!
Someone with an avatar pic like that complaining about "unnatural" looking photos! HaHa
Funny colour, funny treatment, funny angle, exaggerated perspective.

I may not have searched the right sites for this answer, but I will ask it here. What are the reasons for shooting moving water with long exposures to get a white silky look? What is the problem with the water looking like water?

Moving water is just that, "moving"...to shoot at a high speed and freezing it, "it ain't movin no more". How is freezing moving water "in it's natural state of motion" making water look like water, in motion...(is this an oxymoron)
Or maybe it's an artistic approach....and the problem is???

  Right on, depending on what I want to convey. Usually i will take photos of the same scene to convey both, some with slow shutter speed to create the smoothness and others with fast shutter speed to create the action

fast shutter speed
fast shutter speed...

slow shutter speed

Personally, I prefer the rough water effect better than the milky effect.

We're not shooting police crime scene photos here, we are shooting to what we enjoy. Here is one I enjoy and it's starting to look a little "milky"

I particularly like the long er exposure pic. It ties the water to the snow and makes it look cold.

Ask 2 photographers and you'll get 3 different answers. Do whatever floats your boat and makes you happy. It's all part of the fun (creative process). You'll never please everyone no matter what you do :)
