Nikon D7000 with the Nikon 200-400mm lens ?

My question is: can the D7000 be used with the 200-400mm lens ? I have asked a couple of people while out shooting and have received conflicting reports. I'm trying to decide if my next purchase (investment) should be the 300 (2.8) or the 200-400 lens. I currently shoot with the 70-200 (2.8) , which is a great lens for birding. Just looking for a little more reach. Has anyone used this combination ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just wondering, with those great lenses, why haven't you gone to the D800? If you went with the 300mm, you could also use the 1.4 teleconverter as lighting allows and still get fantastically sharp images.

If you're just looking for more reach, have you tried the 28-300mm? It's an excellent lens.

Yes, it will work just fine.
Buy it, send it to me for proper calibration, and I will return it when it is properly dialed in for your body. ;-)

I use the Nikon 1.7 teleconverter (TC-17ll) with my AF-S70-200 (f2.8) and it works like a dream. Good $550 investment for the additional 140mm.

MT is correct! The only thing that I can add is to suggest that MT send it on to me for a second option!

In what ever case you decide show us the clicks!

SteveR... regarding the D800, it boils down to dollars and cents, mostly dollars !

I have the 1.7 tc, and to be honest, I'm disappointed with the results. Images are not as sharp, and it usually stays in my camera pack.

This doesn't quite make sense when you're talking about purchasing the 300mm 2.8 or the 200-400 2.8 (actually it's an f4...the 400mm is a f2.8). Are you aware of the cost of these lenses? It doesn't make sense to put these lenses on a DX camera....sorry....but that's the truth. These lenses deserve the resolution of the D800 as well. They'd be fantastic together.

I have used it with a D700 and still did not have quite the reach I wanted...should have put a converter on it. It was hard for me to heft on to the tripod - however, I was tired from shooting and I have bad back.

The 1.7 is not usually recommended for the 200-400. Use the TC14
