I would like to hear from fellow "hogs" your opinion on portable external hard drives (with or without picture viewer). Do you have one? What are your recommendations? I'm off to Europe this fall and planning ahead......I know I'll take oodles of photos in the two weeks I'm there. (...am looking at Picture Porter 35)

Thank you!

A few years ago I bought a "my passport" portable hard drive from Costco for about $69. It holds one terrabyte of info.
Every time I shoot a series of photos I download them to this external device after I've edited them. For my favorite photos I upload them to my flickr account for another backup.

Oh, you are so funny! Of course I meant it was in addition to first downloading to the laptop. How else could I do PP.

Great idea to have images in two places, especially when going places like Europe (or anywhere).
There is also 'cloud' backup and 32 and 64 GB flashdrives if wish to go lighter. Flashdrives are cheaper lately, but still more money per GB than external hard drives.
I presume you mean in addition to laptop.

Try to get an external HD with USB3 and jif necessary adda Usb3 card to your computer. This will be much faster than an external HD with USB1 or USB2

Good luck

I have a G|Drive Mobile. It comes with 500 or 750 gig, works with USB or Firewire where it gets it's power from so no need for separate power source. If using Firewire, you can have 2 computers attached at the same time. It's very small and light so I don't have any problem carrying it in my camera pack.

I use an external drive for back-up at home. When on trips I use my lap top and sometimes some high capacity sd cards.

When on trips, I have my laptop to download onto, and two portable external hard drives (they're small and portable), and download the pictures every day. I edit them later at home.

   on a trip I download my cards every day to my laptop via lightroom and automatically have light room make a second copy to the external HD
