Wow. Can't believe everyone slamming the 18-200 VR. I'm just getting started also, and took it on a long trip last spring. Have a D5000 and that was the only lens I took. I was very pleased with the results.

We are not slamming it. But just tell which lens is better. If you put a good piece of glass on your camera and take a shot you will see a big difference in the quality. Better colors, sharper pictures and so on. And that is why the price also show the difference too. The glass they use in the high end lenses is way better. And it just depends on what you want to do with your hobby. I use the 28-300 on my camera all the time. It is a great lens. But when I do second shooter at weddings, the good glass comes out and gets used.

Hi romanticf16, Thank you for another perspective -- teleconverters don't accommodate all lenses, do they? Btw, it's the AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1.4 G ED VR...is this the newer version? It's also a great lens but doesn't get me any closer...but I'd hate to give it up...trading the 18-200 for 28-300 may also make sense, especially on the Danube! Thanks, again for your thoughts & enjoy your day!!

Hi imagemeister, Thanks...more to think about...trying to bring to Europe only one or two lenses --- now I'm narrowing it down to the 17-35 2.8 wide angle...and trading in the 18-200 and the 24-120 f4 for a 28-300. Can you put a 1.4x on that glass? Thanks again for your thoughts and time!

Simplist to put the 1.4X on the 24-120 and forget about 28-300 .....+ smaller/lighter !

Hi Imagemeister, Many thanks for the suggest...so do you think that the Tamron SP 1.4x on the 24-120mm f4 work on a Danube River Cruise as well as an 18-200mm on myD7000? Say 'hi' to my friends in Stuart & Mariner Sands! Cheers, Gerry

The 1.4X would be an option on the 24-120. With the 28-300 and 1.4X you would lose AF. The 18-200 sounds great - as a single lens and wide capability.

I'm happy to hear that; I also believe that the 18-200 is great all-in-one easy & light walking-around glass for a river cruise and European cities. Many thanks!
