Started years ago shooting/learning from a free-lance photographer/writer with a Nikon. Started again after the kids left the house. Upon handling and trying out both Canon and Nikon from renting them, I preferred the Nikon. I was extremely tempted to go Canon since my brother-in-law was using them but preferred the Nikon overall. Technically, there is not a lot of difference between the two and both meet the end result. My daughter got interested and we did the same for her, renting both and letting her try them. She also bought Nikon as did my wife. IMHO, each person should rent and actually try them out and then make their own decision. I have heard great things about the model you are choosing and see them quite a lot. If you are considering one and like the operation then buy it. Only other thing would be to compare like product, be it Sony, Nikon, Pentax, etc.... by renting and try them for yourself. Remember, you are the one that has to be pleased in the end.
