And free!

Fences looks like a great resource, but when I Google it it talks about a "thirty-day free trial". Has something changed? Even if it costs a small amount of $ it still sounds like a good alternative.

I agree with Jerry. Fences is an amazing program that allows you to group your icons in blocks and move them as a block anywhere you want.

I second Jerry's recommendation for using Fences. It satisfies my compulsive need for desktop organization!

It's especially useful if switch back and forth between computers.

It's not just Windows. I use Mac Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.8, the OS just before Lion came out). I have this problem occasionally, in fact, just yesterday! All the suggestions for Windows aren't helping me; might any Mac users have an answer? (I keep a current screen capture shot so that I can at least see how I grouped the icons before they became scrambled!)

instead of having 15-20 shortcuts and the desktop, I make folders and put the like programs in that folder. Now I have 3-4 folders on the desktop instead.

I do the same. Works great, minimizes clutter. Nothing to download or install. Just right click and select "New" then "Folder". Name the folder. Then drag your icons into the appropriate folder. When you want to select a program, open the folder and select the icon you want. Saves a lot of real estate on the desktop.

I realize many folks like to keep a ton of icons on their desktop, but I'm not one of them. I have a bare minimum of them (the most used programs), on the desktop. What is so difficult in going to START/PROGRAMS and simply selecting the program you want? Each to his/her own, but it seems to keep the number of icons on the desktop to a small amount might help to solve the inconvenience caused occasionally by 'moving icons'. Fewer to reorganize at least. Just my opinion... and not worth much, but that's it.

Good observation. A desktop full of icons will slow your system down. If you insist on having a lot of icons on your desktop, you should consider changing them to shortcuts if they aren't already.

On Macintosh you can do it by just the click of a button in Finder preferences. Thing a re automatically arranged in a nice neat order by default. We be lucky.

I've been using a free program called IconLock for years. Windows seems to rearrange icons every once in a while and IconLock restores my icon positions with a couple of clicks.
