Have 2 card slots in my D600...
When shooting yesterday, I get an ERR message and it says CARD. I turned off the camera turned back on, took 2 more shots and get same message.
So I switch cards, from slot 2 to slot 1 and vice versa. Shoot two more times and get ERR message again.
Can two cards go bad a the same time? If one card is bad does it corrupt the other card too? Now the one card I thought was good will not format. (I had slot two set in duplicate mode.)
So I remove both and insert a 3rd card in one slot...and all seems to be OK. Any ideas as to what happened..

Could the card(s) be full?
One of the cards might be locked. Check the plastic switch.

no not locked...that is one of the first things I looked at ...nor is either full... I formatted both when I went out yesterday. both were empty
At the risk of asking the obvious: Did you format in-camera?

It sounds like a single card failed. You had "role played by card 2" set to backup so reversing the cards would still result in an error (camera was still trying to write to both cards with each photo taken). Check each card individually in your camera and I believe you will find the offender.

May I ask what brand of cards are you using?

I did this and figured the original in slot 1 that was moved to slot 2 was the culprit.. because the couple more pictures I took when cards were reversed....showed up on what is now slot 1....but not in slot 2..... Ok I think that is the bad card...
however doesn't answer as to why what I think the good card is ...will not format... I will try to format it when I get my D80 out
not sure there is a test to determine if cards are any good....other than putting in camera

is there another way to format these cards outside of camera?

Unfortunately, yes, I've heard about any number of people formating their cards on the computer and then wonder why things don't work as expected. My son was one of them!!!

Putting one in the camera and seeing if it will record images is a quick and easy way to test the card. In-camera formats are 'quick' formats.
I have been able to revive a card that showed 'error' and refused to format in my D7000 by placing it in a reader and doing a 'Full' not "quick" format from my computer. Or you can test the card for errors using the 'chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r commands' on a windows system. (A "full format" is basically a "quick format + chkdsk" ). I am not familiar with Mac systems
With the relative low cost of 8 to 16gb cards, I would likely simply replace the one with errors. Once a card begins to exhibit errors it may be signaling its' imminent death.

One reason why I prefer the one card system. Video or still on the same card.
Cards do go bad, depending on the manufacturer many have life-time warranties and can be replaced free. You need to check the manufacture's web site for information

I will be buying some new.... dont trust either of those cards now....
I have never formatted a card on the computer.... my MAC will ask that question ..... I have always kept on card. my thinking there is what if I screw up the post processing, accidentally delete one that I want to keep...have done this a few times....
I dont format until I am thru with whatever I am doing on the computer...
