I need to download cards while in the field and think some form of small computer is the answer. I would be grateful for the forum's advice and experience with various of the options
I use a Pakard-Bell netbook.

No, more cards, simple, so cheap, get cards
A 10" netbook with 320gb HD would do wonders for you. Download the photos and view on a respectable sized monitor.
Thanks to all for help. I think for safety and to delete earlier a computer, small and light would probably help and now to find one!
Got to agree with JR, unless you need to download thousands of photos while in the field where a big drive is a necessity, (even then) I'd still just go with more cards instead of the extra baggage and one more thing to worry about and to risk of the computer dieing during download and possible corrupting the card. More cards, get back to your car then perhaps empty the cards when you have a more reliable power source.

I would do both, you can't be too careful about losing photos, think stolen/lost cards and computer failure for whatever reason. Redundancy is always good.

I take along my iPad and download each evening without deleting my card. The iPad is small and useful for checking e-mail and reading e-books.
I also have multiple cards, typically one card for each day, which I keep in a card safe in my wife's handbag, remote from my camera equipment. Yes, redundancy is always good.
I no longer input images from a card to anything when I travel, unless I just have to share them. All that stuff is heavy and a pain.
I have a card case that protects them til I get home. It is my experience that I have lost images in some strange ways.
I now travel with only camera(s) and plenty of cards and just a couple of lenses. In fact, I gave my ipad and MacBookPro to my grandkids. They are happy and I am happier with a saver and simpler travel adventure.
Very interesting and thanks. The problem arose when a card - thank goodness just a relatively small one - failed in transit somehow. I thought if I had a copy or downloaded immediately while away on a distant holiday-shoot at least I would have achieved the ability to recover those images. Does an ipad have a USB slot for a card reader or direct from camera?
A decent 10" netbook from Walmart is approx 250-280 and has 2 or 3 USB ports and 320gb hard drive. This is significantly less than an iPad and really no bigger.
If you download to a netbook daily or more you can use the bigger screen to review the shots better than on the camera's LCD to help verify that you got what you wanted.

The iPad does not have a USB port. You have to buy an Apple Camera Connection Kit which is pricey but it works.
