Hi Everyone,
I need help with some editing. I have been using and old version of Photoshop Elements. I use the magnetic lasso to cut people or an item out of one photo and paste it into another photo. When I do this the person or item is always sharper than the rest of the photo. I could use any assistance with this problem. Any help would be greatly assisted. Thanks

see if you can set a feather for the lasso by selecting the lasso tool then look at the menu area to set the feather. Another way is to make your selection then go to menu > selection > feather. the larger the feather the softer the edge. Hope this helps

Run a softener tool along the edges to "seal" the photo in.

Personally, I stay away from the magnetic lasso, as it tends to be less accurate in it's selection. I use either the pen tool, or the polygonal lasso tool. As far as matching is concerned. Make sure that you are minding scale when you move from comp to comp. Also pay attention to color profile between comps. If one layer is sharper than the other, you best bet is to attempt to match the sharpness, and then blend the edging together. You can use the Unsharp tool, or add noise and grain to sharpen up at least the area around the newly integrated footage.

If that doesn't work then you can move onto the paint and clone tools, or the dodge and burn tools. And don't forget color finishing. Sometimes all you have to do is shift the gamma on a close addition to get it to match. And then there are always your masking and your blending styles...

I would check the size, color profile, and the basics first.

AND...
Please don't think I was speaking to you in a condescending or derogatory tone, I simply don't use the magnetic lasso, but it has it's purposes.

You need to be sure that both images are the same resolution and approxamately the same image size. Go to image -size- and make them either 72 for web or 300 for print.

You talked about masking and blending. As I said I am usuing one of the first versions of Elements. Are these two tasks part of the older Elements or are they only in newer versions?

Click on the background layer and go under Filter menu then choose Blur, then Gaussian Blur enter setting 1-2 pixels click OK. Then People Layer go under Filter menu, then adjustments and choose photo filter from the pop up menu choose the warming filter if too intense reduce the density.

I use "Image - Magic Extractor", seems a lot faster and easier.

which photoshop are you using. On mine I have a layers pallete over on the right side of the edit screen. One should have the background and the other of the crop you are adding to the new background. You highlight the one you want to work on. After you finish editing them you click on the down area and flatten to merger all layers together.
