Can anyone tell me "what benefits" they saw after updating their firmware.

I must admit that I used to do it religiously, but never really saw any great improvement in performance. It's now several years since I updated my firmware, and I don't seem to be suffering from it.

If you go to the Canon website it will tell what changes are incorporated in the firmware updates.

I guess my question is less technical and more "day to day life changing improvements"

I guess that I now seek a balance between the hastle/risk of updating firmware, agains the impact/benefits that those updates will have on my daily routine, and my ability to produce a significantly better photograph.

Maybe I'm just getting lazy in my old age. Or maybe I've been bitten just a few too many times.

If it works, don't try to fix it.

I don't use the Canon Utility program to update the firmware on my 7D. I just copy the updated firmware file to the root directory of a CF card and insert it into the camera. From there on I just use the camera firmware update menu.
That's probably the best way to do it.

Not probably, definitely.

I am with you, Amy. :-)

I guess that really depends on if you have a computer or card reader that accepts a CF card huh???

What a coincidence - I have just gone through the same rigmarole on my new 27 inch imac - I loaded EOS utility, eventually, from the supplied CD but then it did not work - got the usual useless message asking me to report the problem to whoeover, Canon or Apple?
Googled and found there was an update which would make the EOS utility work.
Having uninstalled I then reinstalled EOS utility from the CD again - told this had to be installed for the update to work - then downloaded the update, installed it - opened up EOS utility and Hey Presto!! - it worked.
You have to be a detective with Canon - why do thye make it so difficult - thank God for Google and UHH.

So glad I have a sympathizer!!! Detective is right. Canon is not going to help much. That was my original point.

Can you give some details, please? Like, what is the "root" directory.

The root directory is the base directory of the card i.e. not within a folder.

I just love the Canon experience whenever it's time to update the firmware on my 7D. It is such a hassle. Just when I thought I had this process down Canon throws me another curve. This time the EOS Utility program (I am using a MAC OSX operating system), kept telling me I am "Out Of Memory." NOT!!! So I finally figured out that there was an updated version of the EOS Utility program out there on the Canon website. After downloading that I was then able to update the camera firmware. I'm not sure if this process would be any easier on a PC. All I know is Canon makes it very hard to understand their process and gives you no information on when updates are available or required in this case. This has probably been covered before on this site but I am fairly new here. Sorry if I am bringing up old news. OK.....I got that off my chest.

How do you determine which firmware update is in your camera (5D M2). If it is not the latest do you have to download all updates since the one in your camera, or just the latest update?

It is worth the minor investment. Now you aren't risking the possibility of a blue screen of death halfway through a firmware update. Windows is getting more stable, but I still don't want it in the loop. I normally run Linux which has no support from Canon.

Latest & greatest only.

In the menu of a Canon camera there is a "Firmware Version" listed. This can be accessed before downloading anything.

If you were to download the firmware and try an update, the camera will tell you what version is present and which version you have the image for on the card. At this point you have an option to cancel.

I really cannot see the need to update firmware on a camera unless there is a bug in the current firmware. It is like updating drivers on a computer. You may have the most up to date driver but is it any better? Probably not.
Updating software that works fine seems to me to be a waste of time. The exception would be if the new software on your computer fixes a bug, increases functionality or improves security.
On a camera, security is not an issue. New software will not make the sensor more sensitive or the image sharper. If there is a bug, it should have been discovered and fixed long before you bought your camera. If you don't see the results of a bug in your use of the camera, it isn't important anyway.

There is usually a list of what is either fixed, added or improved alongside the firmware download. Usually it is included in the zip file too. Read through it and determine if you need it. Often the enhancements include support for newer lenses or data used for lens peripheral illumination correction.

Believe me, you're not the first Canon user to have this problem. You're right, Canon does a lousy job of notifying users regarding firmware updates. Normally, the updates come up on this site.

The one thing that I find useful is that the Canon website make the information available if you're looking for it. When I updated my 7D, I went through their site, downloaded the upgrade on to the memory card in my camera and then followed the directions from the webite to install.

If you register your equipment online Canon will notify you of pending firmware updates. Finding new versions of Canon utilities is up to the individual. I check every three to four months.
