Is it ok to take shots of Churches with out asking first.
Our next monthly contest in my club is Steeples. So do ya think it ok to shoot without asking. These will need cropping but no sure which one to work up. Thoughts anyone.

generally speaking, it's okay to photograph anything you can see from a public place. of these two, i'd go with the sky shot... the symbolism of the cross in the sky is better than in the trees, and you won't have to mess with the wires...
It is fine to photograph the outside of a building that has no people in the shot.T he steeples themselves are another problem. The problem is they are kind of uninteresting. A pointy thing with a cross on the top. Try to frame it with tree branches or catch the light reflecting off the cross n the top. Or photograph it from a really steep angle from almost directly below. Or if you can, place it in context, showing the houses around it. Try googling images of steeples for some ideas.
hope this helps.
Thx for the feed back I will google some and get some ideas.
A little and quick fix for power lines is a clone brush in a simple editing program. I use one from Corel. I paid $60 at Staples on sale but have seen it for $49. Great program for simple people like me. The removal of the power lines took under 30 seconds!

Legally you can take anybody or anythings photograph as long as it is visable from public property. Even with a 1000mm tele lens no-one can stop you or stop you from using the pictures. Howver, you must not hold the subject to ridicule or be defamatory. Doing that renders you liable to a civil suit. But that does not happen in practice.
Take a photo of a married women cavorting with her boyfriend is acceptable captioning it "Women with on the side lover" might get you into someones bad books.

You've gotten answers to this already, so I won't beat it to death. Just wanted to acknowledge your photos.
Nice! :)
Steeples make excellent subjects, imo... as do the churches they're atop of.
Thx all for the input well guess the clone brush is on my gotta have list . Great job I was going to crop around it but don't leave much when you do that. That is what this forum is all about sharing ideas. Life can be great if we just treat each others nicely. Tha again.
It comes to the "expectation of privacy".
If you do not sell the picture to a third party for commercial use the property owner's expectation of privacy is generally not violated and a property photographic release is not needed.
However for situatios like this I find I spend more time getting permission than making pictures.
Usually the property ownerwill give you permission on the promise of a finished 8x10.

A release is not for you, it's for whoever buys your images. Read Dan Heller's response at
http://www.danheller.com/model-release.html .
It's not too long, but does cover the issues.
This will not be for a sale or any type of profit. Just braggin rites in our club. So I'm sure no release will be necessary. But thx for the info very good info on that site I may need it in the future. Here is another few steeples I just found.
backed up and framed it with the trees

at one point i was trying to produce a coffee table book of the history of indian river county churches. I took alot of outside shots without getting permision but for interior shots i always asked. I discovered many interesting people and stories by asking, Rule 1 in life: IT NEVER HURTS TO BE POLITE.
Looks good but what was it about? (pretty) now
