I don't know of any horror stories on PayPal and eBay Maybe I'm just lucky. I had two issues with selling stuff Both items were over thousand dollars. And I have one issue with Buying. I bought a Nikon camera with two lenses a tripod cleaning kit filters I paid around $1200. It wound up at the guy was a Thief never had cameras . every time I got my money back from PayPal or eBay.

My credit card company is not involved. Buyer's credit card company and PayPal are involved.

Did you ship the camera such that you have tracking information? That might prove it was delivered, but probably not support much in the way of fraud action against the buyer.

One more question if somebody does have that stolen camera they probably paid for it. Say they bought it on eBay or craigslist.
What happens then. Do you reimburse them for what they paid or do they lose the money. Very interesting scenario???.

Yes I have tracking information. Matter-of-fact one I didn't even want to ship to Brazil the guy pleaded with me and begged me and said he will pay the extra shipping cost. So I added insurance and the shipping cost to the item. Long story short he said he did not get the item he wanted me to pay half this way we both only lose half He put a complaint in with PayPal I put a complaint in with PayPal he lost.

If someone has your stolen camera and you can prove it is yours then you get the camera back. They are in possession of stolen property. Does not matter how they acquired it. Then they will be answering questions for the police. If there is an arrest, your camera may be held as evidence until the matter is resolved. At least this is the way it used to work. Today, who knows?

My youngest son bought a lawn mower on Craig's List and guess what?!!! He not only didn't get the mower but lost the money...the money was traced out of country and couldn't get it back. Told him to never, ever buy any thing online like that again.

I personally have purchased and sold many items through Craigslist but I have always met the buyer/seller in a high traffic area for exchange and use cash only. I have not purchased camera equipment just odd knick knacks. I am wary of the service and only use it for miscellaneous household stuff. Sorry to hear of your son's problem but we all live and learn and even best of us get taken occasionally.

[quote=indyDean]I have tried using CameraTrace and other tools to no avail - no exif data hits. My only hope now is that someone may go to buy this camera (or a pawn shop may search for the serial) and find this post and contact me.

Item was sold by me on eBay and then the purchaser issued a credit card chargeback 7 months(!!!) later. My days of eBay/PayPal are now over - seller protection is a joke if this can happen so far after transaction date (Sep 2012).

Try this website, remember that they can only locate it if the pictures from your stolen camera have been posted online.

...

If anyone knows of other tools or if there is a lost or stolen camera registry / database please let me know.

Stolen Camera Info:
Sony
A77
Serial 0179460

Okay - this was not intended to be a PayPal/eBay/Craigslist thread. Let's just say my camera was stolen and leave it at that.

In this regard I have made a very interesting discovery - Sony does NOT provide the camera's serial number in its EXIF data for the A77 (feel free to google) so I now have little hope of recovery through online tools.

I can't believe you fell for that crap I used to sell pretty often on e/bay and get those e/mails all the time, one time the even sent me a bogus travelers check, and if that's not enough called me to find out if I got the funds! When I took it to my bank the said someone stole a legit travelers check and filled it with a bogus name, acc# etc.....I once got one from a prince of a small country telling they would double what I was asking if I mailed out! e/bay is loaded with crooks, spam artist it got so bad I stopped selling on it.....

Awhile back I sold a film 35mm to a buy on e/bay who asked a million of the same questions I had nine detailed photo's and a very detailed description, there three other parties interested be he was winning bidder anyway to make long story short A week after I got his conformation he got the camera the next thing I know he put a complaint in with e/bay the article he got wasn't what was in the picture, asked him to send me a photo of what I sent, he didn't oblige, here's the scam part! e/bay suspended me and paid him the full amount he paid me and he got to keep the camera!

E/BAY didn't want to be bothered with me,I traded on there for 9 years without a negative coment and yet their quickest solution was to send this CROOK/scammer what ever you want to call him a full refund.
