   Good job, Larry! You sure do have the hang of it now. I gave up on this kind of bird. I can't run around the woods like I used to so I'll keep on waiting. Thanks for showing and keep on shooting.

Thanks. I was really lucky with this guy. i was leaving the preserve, in my truck and saw him flash in the woods. Jumped out of the truck, camera in hand, crawled over the dune and got this one shot---then---poof he was gone. Did give me a butt shot on departure. :-)

Wonderful shot Larry! I think it's great :) I've seen one and only once about 7 years ago while sitting in my vehicle in front of a tree, flew right to the tree, stayed for a few minutes and was gone before I knew it! I think they are amazing to see and thank you so much for sharing with us :)

I find the particular bird a real pain to photograph. They seem to be secretive, hang out in dark places and never let you get near them. I was lucky to find this fellow recently. He allowed me this one shot, realized I was present---and quickly left.

This was shot with my trusty 200-400 lens with tc1.4 attached, hand held at 1/80 of a second. The bird was in a deeply wooded area and i was lucky to even see him.

Thanks for looking.

Larry

Nice capture, Larry. You are right, they are hard to photograph.

Beautiful Shot!!! I managed to see and get a photo of one last year from the boardwalk at Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge. Unfortunately my lens just did not have the reach to get a beautiful shot like yours. He was at the top of a very tall pine tree. I felt very lucky to even see him as I had never seen one before. You are very good with that lens.

Larry,
Pileateds like suet and the blend that WBU sells. The large birds are visiting my deck-mounted feeders every day. When they see the camera they pose.

I agree with you! This bird is not the easiest to capture. Congratulations! Great job and worth the time to get this picture.

I agree with you. I have seen them at Loxahatchee but usually in the tress on the right just past then entrance. When they are up in those trees there is no hope of r a photo. Sometimes you get lucky and see them on that boardwalk area but I've never gotten a photo in that area worth showing.

I believe that WBU is Wild Birds Unlimited. A national chain that sells birds "stuff" including feeders, seed, books, houses and so forth. These fellows like heavy wooded areas and I can't lure them to my yard area. So I have to get my photos the old fashioned hard way.
