Most of the hummingbirds here in the U.P. left a couple weeks ago. I don't know whether this young one didn't get the memo about it being time to migrate, or whether it wants to stay around to see the U.P. color season, but it is still hanging around my house. I captured these this afternoon. I don't think I've ever seen one with such a big belly. We have had numerous nights in the lower 30's, and the night before last was in the upper 20's. At least it is supposed to be warmer for the next week or so.

These photos are absolutely INCREDIBLE! You do such beautiful photos. Wish I had half of your talent. (And wish I had the same camera as you) :-)

Thank you for your kind compliments. A lot of my successes are due to a lot of patience and practice (and a lot of failures). I believe that what talent I have is a gift from God, and I'm trying to make the best use of it I can.
The hummers in your yard now most likely summered farther North and are refueling in your yard before continuing their migration. leave your feeder out for as long as you can and you'll see more over the next few weeks.

Thank you for your recommendation, and I plan on doing that. On nights when it gets down to freezing or below, I bring the feeder in at dark, and put it back at daylight so the sugar water isn't quite so cold first thing in the morning. In this case, I believe it is the same young one that continues to hang around. It is here much of the time, is always all by itself, and has the same mannerisms. It also spends a lot of time looking up, like it is expecting to be chased away from the feeder and can't believe it's luck. It was still here this morning. I am about 10 miles from Lake Superior, and it's being here does not seem normal for this time of year.
Yooper, I love Hummingbirds, as does my sister. She has a birthday coming up soon.
Could I have your permission to use your second photo in a Birthday greeting card, please. How would you like me to give you credit?
You sure have a talent for photographing birds......do you live near Iron River or Iron Mountain ?

Yes, that would be OK with me. Thank you for asking. If you add a note such as: Photo (c) Paul Nelson that would be appreciated.

Ditto...fantastic shots
Thank you for the encouragement. This little bird just sat there and posed for a while each time it came to the feeder, like he (she?) was waiting for me to take it's portrait.

Thank you. I have an affection for all of God's creatures, and have a lot of patience, which also helps. Actually, I live closer to Marquette.

Thank you very much. I just visited your website and it is wonderful. Each one of the photos in your Gallery would make great Greeting Cards. Have you ever thought of making them for sale?

Keeping your feeders out encourages them to stay. Hummingbird feeders should be down by now. I live in Oklahoma and took mine down last week.
