I jumped right into the deep end and turned the dial to manual when I purchased this camera a few weeks ago. Here is a result of reading Bryan Peterson's books.

Loved my D5100.... caused me to learn so much in so short a time... but that's another story.... Well done on the first posts and in manual as well pat yourself on the back mission accomplished. The camera can get awesome shots if you keep the ISO down

Love the model by the way absolutely gorgeous... Get some portraits of his head and I'm hooked

Excellent work and start with your new camera! Thanks so much for sharing. What a lovely dog and scenery you have there. My only suggestion might be to try a larger aperture and softer background that would select the dog nicely as the subject. Oh.... and re-post that 2nd shot so that we can download it. Very nice, I want to be there.

Thanks much! I was hoping for some input from you pros out there. I will try suggestions on different ways to take photos since I'm a rookie. I took the second photo with a bit more background in focus for a Golden Retriever contest where they want to see some landscape.

I have the standard kit lens and a nikkor 55-300 that I purchased with the camera. I'm already looking at what some of the really nice lenses can do. But for now I will practice with what I have.

These are great! I have a D3100 and have not been brave enough to go to manual. Working on it, though!

I have a nice little point and shoot Olympus camera and dreamed of a DSLR. So, I found out how to work the little buttons and knobs at least to get me started and told myself that there is no better time like the present.
