I would like to set up a web site but have no idea how to do it. What do I need to stay away from.Where do I start. How do I know how secure the site will be and what is the cost. Social security doesn't go far!

There are sites like yahoo etc. that can help you set up a basic posting site for free, just google the idea. If you want to get more involved you should check with local colleges especially community colleges. they sometimes offer computer training specifically for seniors. Take your time and look around, even check with a local computer shop, a lot of them offer web hosting. just let us know when your up so we can visit

Smugmug, Flickr, etc are relatively inexpensive and widely known.

Depends on what you want to do with it. For just a gallery type thing, Flickr is pretty much the best known.

Easy! Well, pretty easy anyway.

Use Weebly.com, and it's a fairly simple process, as long as you can type, and follow simple instructions. And, it's free! You can pick the style you prefer and change it later if you want.

http://www.weebly.com

To start with it can be totally free if you use the weebly web address. This is a good idea as you get started. Later you can buy your own domain name for about $7-$12 a year (use 1and1.com or godaddy.com to buy your domain name)

I've used Weebly for several years and never had a problem. You can do everything yourself, or perhaps get a friend to set it up for you; just depends on your level of comfort in doing the work. It's easy enough for a novice, but has enough features that even a web designer can make a great site.

Here's a sample of one of my sites, just to show a few samples of what can be done with photos and art:

Do you want to have your own website or just an existing site to stall your pictures?
Do you know how to build a web or weblog?
Do you have knowledge and understand codings like html and ccs?
There are also many templates for sale for below the $100 to build on. Do you have your own domain name and have you registered that? You can do that at godaddy.com.
The latest and best system to build a site is a wordpress site. As soon as you have a name registered you need to park your site to connect your domain name to wordpress and you have the option to create as many email addresses. Like yourname@yourname.com. One of the best for parking is www.Hostgator.com
If you do not have knowledge how to do all the above, you should hire somebody. I know in my area some computer youngsters that will do that for a couple hundred $$.
I am 75 and followed a webinar for 6 month how to do all the above from an original template. It is called www.LetPicturesTalk.com. I am not able to make it more professional due to lack of understanding the coding, but I have found a young guy who is willing to help modify my site, especially the colors and he will soon start.
A lot of work, but this way you are the sole owner of a blog site and your own email address. I have at the moment 5 registered domain names.

I made up my mind in 1998 that I would learn HTML so I didn't have to use all those icky templates and I did!
A free site is good for a beginning site, but as you begin to get more hits, you need more room for those, but you can get plenty of that for anywhere from $4.95 a month to $11.95. Yahoo is GOOD.
Mine is in a mess right now and needs some work but I advertise my artwork there (since 1998) and I now sell to people in 50 states and 5 other countries. You can see it at www.jozart3.com

PS: I can't do it right now, it's my busy season and I am swamped, but after Christmas I could teach you how to use HTML so your site can be exactly like you want it, without using the templates that everyone has access to. It's not that difficult to learn, trust me. I am 74 and have done my own since 1998.
If I can help, let me know.

There are several free servers, some with lots of space. Sign up, and build your own version of torment. Been doing it since 2000, I updated this one in 2006.

STEVE! I looked! Beautiful! We went to a horse show in Ashville one year and stayed in Waynesville, went to Maggie Valley aand stayed at the Gem Motel just above Lake Junaluska. We simply didn't want to come home. On TV they used to say "You may leave North Carolina, but North Carolina will never leave YOU!" Oh my, it's true!!!!

quote=Wild about I would like to set up a web sit... (show quote)

I know how to open each page of my weblog in the html code, but I have no idea which item I should change, like a color and so on. Because of my little knowledge I have approached a youngster who is a final student in coding and design. He might be available after 12-15-2011

Right now I am staying, with one of my daughters in Canton. That's about 8 miles from Junaluska, I'm going to try to get out there, and do a photo documentary of that area; but it will have to wait on Spring now.

I have left North Carolina several times in my lifetime, but I have never managed to stay away long, like an old dog; I always came home.

My dad was from Waynesville, so I'm closer to home now than when I am in Asheville. The Waynesville, Maggie Valley area, is some of the prettiest in the mountains. If you get back this way, try to get over to Catalooche Valley. Its about 18 miles north of Waynesville, off of NC/US-276N. This place will blow your mind, and BE SURE to bring your camera.
