I have been lurking on this site for a few weeks. I do mostly sports action shots but want to start doing portraits. Please tell me your thoughts of this photo.

Bringing out what seems to be the personality of this person, I'd crop (more personal, less distant) and manipulate lights and darks for her smiling brightness.
Thank you for the advice.

Hi Gerald.
Well let's see. She's pretty, she's in focus, she's well lit... all good things.
The only things I see you missed is framing. She has too much head room, as I see it, and she's centered left. Keeping her nose centered will take care of the left framing problem and tilting down for head room will take care of that.
I've included a portrait below. I shot it will my t1i, 50mm f/1.8, under available in home window light hand held. ISO 100, 1/200 shutter,
f/2 aperture. Keep at it. By the way this is straight out of the camera.
Thank you. I did no editng to the photo, not that i would know how, im camping and i only have my camera and tablet.
Thanks for the advice.
I think the lighting is just fine. The only thing I would have done different is the Law of the Thirds. You have the subject turned to HER right and placed in the photo to HER right. I would have moved her further to the right side of the photo. Otherwise it's a good photo

It's a nice photo. Tramsey is right, you'd have probably gotten a more pleasing result if she was further to the right of the photo and looking in. The "rule of thirds" is maybe a bit more than necessary, especially since you shot so close. Personally, I'd like a little more air around her, especially if you wanted to frame this. I'm not anything like a portrait photographer, but you might also have wanted to have her turn her head away a bit more, while still looking at the camera. More light on her eyes would have help, perhaps using your flash.
Well, you asked. :)

All good advise but I think you've captured her.

I think it's a fine photo, very natural looking....well done! thumbup:
Crop the green off the top, and set your focus on her eyes. Her hairline on her forehead seems to your focus spot instead of her eyes.

I would like to see what is at the bottom of the necklace.
