Yeah....cool idea with the lampshades on the flash units
that is a really great idea. I have a half dozen of the 560 yongnuos, (and a half dozen of the cactus v5 triggers) never thought of this. and the shads act as soft light diffusers!! what a great idea.
thanks for the post.
Thanks Jerry. That's "thinking out of the box..."
Great shot. Bravo! The lighting is superb.
Great idea, but doesn't look like a fun and great party! lol
by the way...
If you'd have gelled your flash heads with CTO, and put your WB on "tungsten" then the flash light color would have blended in with the ambient lamps in the background (see my shot above)

Amazing, looks so non-flash!

Can you explain what you did?

Sure, If I remember :)
I put a speedlight in the lamp, gelled it with a CTO gel to get the color temperature warm and to match the ambient light.
I set the camera for a proper exposure using the speedlight, and then I slowed down the shutter speed to add ambient light into the scene; as ambient is controlled by the shutter but flash isn't affected.
After doing all that, I found that I liked the "pool of light" effect more and raised the shutter back up to 1/200 ISO 400 to eliminate the ambient light almost all together.
I got the idea from David Hobby, aka "The Strobist". He had an article about substituting speedlights for lamps but making them look like they were actually lamps.

That's amazing. It doesn't look like a flash at all.
Doing a search for CTO gel, got me this. Interesting story about his previous free sample giveaway.

That's pretty good for those gels...free shipping too.
I usually buy the Rosco sample pack for about 6.00 or so...then throw most of them away.
The strobist site (
www.strobist.blogspot.com) is a great site...he worked for the Baltimore sun as a photographer for many years and he blogged about most of his assignments and how he "got 'er done"...very instructive to see how a pro handles different lighting situations under pressure.

Yes, the Strobist site is very good.
The Rosco Sample Pack used to be free. He would send small samples out to professionals in the industry. Then the DSLR crowd found out that those samples were a good fit on speelights, and they began requesting them by the thousands.
The price certainly seems good for those gels, but I doubt that I would use them enough to justify buying them. I'm trying something new. It's called "self-control."
