Night ski, have at it. You are in good company. You raise a question I have a problem with. How does one read a histogram with a modecom of intelligence?

...now I have new info to look at and I appreciate that info and the opportunity to read it and think about it, even possibly change the way I do things.

Anyone who thinks they have all of this figured out is only fooling themself. I have been at it for more than 40 years and I don't know all of the answers but, like you, I want to keep learning.

There is good information here but we also need to look at additional sources.

There are no simple answers, nothing you can "always" do. You need to know the limitations of the camera system and of yourself.

One of the best exsplinations of how a histogram works is go to www.sekonic.com. If their explanation is still on line it is a good one.

I probably shouldn't have said anything. I am so new to photography. I was just excited about what I learned last night reading the "Understanding Exposure" book, and I wanted to share.

Sounds to me like you have a good grasp on Peterson's book.( one of my favorites ). It helps you understand the simplicity of the triangle and gives you a good foundation to build on. Don't apologize for thinking :-)

Whew... I am exhausted! After reading 7 pages of great information I only have one question left. Is it better to underexpose or overexpose? :-)

Really Wabbit...you mean you don't have a perfectly clear idea of exactly what to do in every situation by now?

It actually is not better to under expose or over expose. Neither is correct (thus the words "Under/Over") Expose correctly. Which is more often achieved by slightly over compared to the meter. Not always, but under exposure can lead to more noise. Dramatic over exposure is a disaster.

I was just reading about this last night. I can't tell you how many UHH'rs told me to buy Byron Peterson's understanding exposure. I did and I am so glad. Try to get your meter on 0, but if you can't go for the under exposure, and get the book. It's amazing.

I am trying to find what he said in his book about it to understand his context. Could you tell us which chapter it is in? I, too enjoyed his book, and am now reading "understanding flash exposure". Btw, welcome to the group!

I don't have the book with me right now, but I believe it may have been in the wb chapter. It is in the first few chapters, because that is all the further I am.
