OK did the scan for virus and updated the drivers, still have the issue.

Did you update your CODEC for this camera? Do other things work on the USB or what ever BUS that these card readers were using? If they work for other things, then its the card reader drivers that are corrupted. If nothing works in these inputs (USB or otherwise) it's your Bus Controller or Bus control software that is at fault. I seem to remember that you could still download directly from the camera using the USB bus and the PICTBRIDGE software. Picassa or any other files download program containing your camera's CODEC should also be methods to download the RAW files to your computer. Then a simple conversion to any other file format. If all of this fails, I suspect you got infected with a virus that has corrupted your drivers or profiles.
If all else fails. you can always try reloading your backup from when your system did work properly, but if your computer still contains this virus or Trojan, this problem will reappear in the future. Did this occur after you had an OS update from 'Microsoft? Your update history will confirm this.

What worked fine? If you don't use "quote reply" or reference what worked, we have no idea what you're referring to.

Never saw anything quite like this.. What brands of readers are you using?

Just for grins, are you using the same USB port to download from the camera as you used for the card readers? It looks like everything but the ports and the readers has been ruled out.
If you used the same port, then that leaves it on the reader. If different ports, then one of your ports may be acting up.

The first reader is build in to the PC and never had any problems before. The 2nd reader was a kingston type that I never had any issues before also. I used the same USB that is also with the first reader, so it can be the USB it is attached too.

So what you're telling me is that your USB BUS has crashed? Can you use any of your USB ports with other external devices? Does PICTBRIDGE work?
If not, I would recommend that you reload your BIOS. Sometimes there are cases where there is a shift in the digital data stored in your FLASH BIOS file that can totally screw up a system. After loading the correct version of BIOS, check that your CMOS data is correct. CMOS data can be lost or corrupted when the battery on the motherboard has not been replaced. They are readily available in any good drug store in the disc battery section. The specific battery designation depends on the manufacturer of your computer. This battery is the source for a trickle current that keeps the CMOS data stored when the power is off. It needs to be replaced about every 3 to 5 years and looks like a small disc battery located on your motherboard. You will need to reload the CMOS data after this battery is replaced so your bridge controller chip knows what your system peripheral are, their designations and how they are configured.
Please get back to me either here or by PM if this is the problem since your dilemma has disturbed me and it would be nice to know the solution. I suspect the replacement of your CMOS battery and the subsequent re-entry of your CMOS data will solve your problem though since having 2 card readers fail at the same time is very improbable.

Just need to say thanks for all the help. When I saw this problem I knew if I posted it that I would have some help, thanks.

Here is the update. I uninstall the drivers and reinstalled for the USB. I did a window update than rebooted. Did a complete virus scan for the hard drive with the OS loaded on it.

Did a test and no longer have the problem. All the files are looking good with no issues.

So case closed!

Glad to hear you're up and running again. How old is this computer anyway? The reason I ask is that too many people forget about the replacement of the CMOS Disc battery onboard the MOBO and eventually have problems losing CMOS. Luckily, this time, it looks like your computer only had corrupted USB drivers.

It sounds like the USB drivers were at fault. When you reinstalled, did you let Windows find the drivers, or did you have to get them?

The pc I build about one year ago. I allowed the OS to find and install the new drivers after I removed it using the device manager.

That's the way I prefer to have it happen, and I'm always glad when Windows find what it needs.

I suspect that when you got an update for your OS or other program, the USB drivers got corrupted. Thanks for the explanation of the solution that worked for your system. BTW, did your scan for viruses, worms or Trojans find anything that seemed suspicious?
