These are both very small...maybe 1-mm long. Heavily cropped.
Nikkor 105G macro lens with Raynox 250 add-on. ISO 640, 1/100-sec at f/22, with SB-400 speedlight at 1/16 output.
Gettin' pretty damn good!
How are you liking the set up so far? Are you focused all the way out when taking the photos? Asking because of the heavy crop. I did a little myself today, same setup but have an extra 20mm of tubes before the rig. With this extra bit of magnification, I'm having problems with mirror slap, just enough throwing my focus off. Have cranked my shutter speed up to 1/320 and has helped. I can't turn the flash down much as I haven't moved forward on a bracket yet, so no help with reduced flash power. When it's nailed it's nail, or it's crap. A tripod would help tremendous, but.. What's your thoughts.

This is at, or near 1:1 with the Raynox added. No tubes. So are you saying you are using the other end of the focal range? I'm having a damn hard time with the DoF. My keep rate is still less than 10%. Maybe I'm using this wrong? I'm basically moving myself to find the focus. My SB-400 speedlight is probably a weaker flash than what you are using. My flash is at 1/16 power, on manual. I could have adjusted the ISO and changed the flash output-- but that takes me longer and it had started to rain. These were all handheld. Maybe I will try a tripod. The ants were too fast-- the aphids might work.

Thanks. I'm still tossing a lot-- but maybe that's to be expected?

The higher your mag, the fewer you keep. Inverse rule is a bitch!

No, your using the right end. I'm at 3 inches from subject at the 1:1 for the 100mm. I guess the extra tube with the 250 just puts me a lot closer. I'm really cranking my flash up as it's still mounted on top of the camera, need to get the cord so I can move down on a bracket. Yes, the trade off for magnification is the DOF. Have to be squared times ten to get a good shoot. Half my spider shoots only one eye is focused. I'm throwing 99% out the window myself, it's part of the deal since we hand hold these shoots. I'm going to dig my monopod out. Have used a thin stick/pole placed on the ground like a monopod and holding onto with a few fingers from my camera hand, this really helps. I just know there's no in between, either focused or not.. Mirror slap is killing me know. I think the extra length and weight at end of the lens makes the vibration worse. I didn't have this problem with the stack lens, maybe it's the tube that's not helping??
I'm using an SC-28 sync cord to get my flash right next to the lens front. I'm going to go back to 200 ISO and crank the flash power to 1/4. I'm amazed that my little SB400 works so well. I really like the small size, but now I'm reading that I need a larger diffuser. I guess I'll go check out Shahan's folding diffuser box... I had a really nice shot of an aphid inside a folded leaf-- but just couldn't nail the focus. Deleted them. At least I know not to post (or keep) my crap!
Thanks. This makes sense. I like the capability of folding it up. Looks like just a rubber band or velcro to fasten.
Great photos, love the aphid convention.
nice shots, you are getting really close.i have a sb400 and have it set at 13th power.i like my diffuser but i'm going to make another to compare.tom

Thanks. I'm going to make a "folding model" like Shanahan's. Since we have the same flash, I'll be watching for your stuff with the new diffuser.
