What are these spots from?

Took photos at the Saguaro Natl. Monument and discovered these spots to the right side (horiz. hold, top of vert. hold).
Taking test shots at home revealed these only appear when using any of my zoom lenses, not my 50 prime. Can't see anything inside camera, even with the mirror raised. Any ideas?
Thank you

Agreed. The reason they are not apparant on the prime lens is probably because you use it at wide aperture. The spots are most obvious at high aperture numbers - try stopping the prime down to f16 or smaller.

Right. And take a shot of a clear sky and de-focus the lens. There could be spots in other parts of the image that are concealed by the picture.

Hi DrivenDan, in your camera manual there is a section on cleaning your sensor. I do mine about once a month to make sure unless I can't then I take it to a facility that can clean it for sure.

I never knew that my camera (D600) had a cleaning function. I know it can do the auto cleaning at startup/shut down, but I didn't know it had a cleaning cycle that runs for up to ten seconds. What's the difference between the two?

Isn't the camera's cleaning cycle just bursts of air onto the sensor? I brought my camera to my local shop, family owned and run. They charge $50 bucks to clean the sensor but if you tell them you bought the camera there it is at no charge. I had these spots after just one windy day on the beach.

I think the auto clean feature uses vibration to try and shake dust off the sensor

Yes. It shakes it three times. :D

I know it can vibrate the sensor at startup and shut down, but I wonder if the "Clean it now" feature does anything different.
