Marty....I forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed your photos. I'm stuck in landlocked Dallas and miss the opportunity to take such shots. Just be careful of those ledges. Lenses are replaceable. Good editors are hard to come by.

Thank you again Steve,
The ocean is so much part of me I can't imagine not being near it somehow.
To me living in Texas would be like low tide 24/7 ;-)

I'll do my best to help ya smell some of that that clean fresh salt air from downeast Maine. As a matter of fact I have a couple of new fog images I'll post up later tonight,....hows that for quick turn around service.

Will be careful on this end.
Looking forward to a new setup,...will be Nikon,...I know that much..
Feel like a fish out of water (no pun intended) without my camera.

As I was reading your message , I could just feel it in my own bones. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. I'm really sorry! However, when you get ready to sell some of those items let me know. I have a D300 and have been extremely happy with it. Now, if you will excuse me, I think I'm going into another room and cry and mourn for your loss. O(

Thank you
Will wait and see what of my D300 accessories are compatible on whatever camera I get and post on UHH what I will not be needing any longer.
....Stay tuned.

PS,...Any skin divers out there planning a visit to downeast Maine,...Maybe be a lobster living in my 500mm lobster pot.

OH MAN! That's one of those cases that you would hope you wake up in a sweat and pray to God that you never have that nightmare again. Sorry to hear of the loss, I feel it.

Well, you've got a better wave shot than I ever made, but I've got a better camera.

There's a strong lesson here: get a personal property floater appended to your business/homeowner/renter policy. They're cheap and almost always there for you, though I had a friend who they yintzed out of some bucks. But here's my only experience withe claim: I visited a Paris pissoir and stupidly hung my camera bag on the wall, slightly behind me. When I turned to wash up, my heart turned to stone: the camera bag was gone. In it were a Leica 3G; 50mm Summicron f2; 35mm f3.5 Summaron; 90mm Elmar; 135mm Hektor; and the rolls I had exposed that day. My Dad in Los Angeles had insisted I get insurance for the trip, so I called him damn near blubbering in gratitude. (You should know that this was his equipment, given to me for the trip.). He called his insurance guy; who called a cooperating foreign company; that one sent me to a Leica dealer who replaced all the stuff -- including the film -- and billed the insurance company back home. I went on my way a much wiser (and very grateful !) man.

Last Thursday while photographing at Quoddy Head State Park,...

Had been there for almost two hours photographing 10-14 foot seas crashing into Gulliver's Hole a scenic point there. It was windy off and on but not as bad as I'm accustomed to seeing,....sooooooo I thought.

I had worked my way out onto an isolated precarious location with a fantastic viewpoint,...I've worked it many times previously,....the narrow ledge wasn't even 3 foot wide and about 45 feet above the rocks out into the ocean. Had been shooting elsewhere as well for several hours and just about to relocate once again. I had just removed my 32GB compact flash card that was now full with my mornings work.

Then,...............I had a rude awakening I'll not soon forget,.... when I turned for a second to grab something out of my camera bag,....I heard the tripod crash to the ground,...as I turned and I saw the 500mm lens with my D300 attached,... snap off the tripod mount and drop virtically down out of sight.
The sound of camera and lens make as it smashed its way down against the rocks is a sound I hope to never ever hear again.

I was in total disbelief,...in just a split second,...everything gone.

Had the 500mm base casting not sheared off,...the tripod would have gone too.
At that point though I was totally and completely demoralized and sick to my stomach. All I could do was sit there and talk to myself over and over,...(lots of adjectives)

So,....ladies and gentleman and fellow hedgehogs,......PLEASE learn from my sudden poor judgement and costly $$$$ mistake.

Watch carefully your equipment,...no matter how secure you think it is sitting there exposed to the forces of nature and gravity.

I never, never thought in all my years of being a photographer that I would be thr recipient of something like this. I have always erred on the side of being toooooo careful and always observant of potential dangers,.......

But not on March 7th, 2013,....I paid dearly in a split second,...thinking all was secure with my equipment.
Too late to get the moment back,....the horse was already out of the barn.

Anyway,....I wanted to share that with each who reads this,...be careful,...IN ADVANCE,....of something unexpected happening.

Yes I had it insured,...or I should say under insured,....had recently decreased the insured value,...why,...because something this catastrophic wouldn't happen to me,....yeah right.

Will be having some D300 accessories for sale soon as I look for a new replacement camera.

Thanks for reading this and I hope it awakens in you,...that false sense of security I thought I had.

Ive posted an image of where it happened,...as a visual so you can see the crime scene and the drop off,
The outcrop from the tree on the right side of the image attached,...thats where I was standing.

The second image was taken from that ledge just prior to the deep six plunge.
Was the image worth the cost,......not unless I get paid big $$$ bucks for the image,...totally unlikely.

It helps to laugh,..........now,...not then.

Be well ,....and that includes your camera gear.

Marty,

That's really awful, but I'm glad you didn't end up in the water with your gear. You read about that happening too.

Thats a bummer, Maine coast never forgiving to those of us who forget we're just a speck on mother natures radar, I really like your wave and coast pictures, I grew up on the relative flat coast area of Belfast and have visted the Quoddy area with family, definitly one thing to pull from your story is you weren't hurt and you are looking for something that can be replaced good luck in your search for new gear

Wow! I have had some calls but nothing that bad. Good think you didn't react and try and grab it or you may have been down there with your camera. While it is expensive, the bottom line is it only stuff and can be replaced in time. I am sure your wife isn't worried about the camera and was happy you came home.

I have had my 800e for over three months and 2000 photos so far. Have never experienced a moir'e pattern. I take wild life and landscapes. Maybe I would see it if I took Fashion photos.

Hi dourob,...

Thanks for your response.
That's the consensus I'm getting on the D800E also,....me thinks thats the way I'm going to go.
I was wondering though about macro work with the D800E,.....like on macro subjects,...like insects have subtle and intricate patterns on their bodies and wings,....or,....patterns are found frequently in many other places in outdoor macros.
Any feedback on that from yourself or other D800E owners,..or am I fretting over nothing?
Thanks
Marty

Thank you DugE,

Another thing I often forget when I'm at Quoddy,....I'm all alone 99% of the time,...I seldom see another person there in the off season,....and cell phone service is sparse at best.
So your right, if something happened I'd be by my onesies.

We are moving to Belfast sometime in the near future.
I'll miss Quoddy and the remoteness here and probably visit here to photograph even more.

Again thanks for your reply.
UHH my extended family.

No experience with insects, but keep in mind that you will be applying a natural blur filter once you start stepping down beyond f8. Since macro, in most cases needs all the depth of field you can get, stepping down to f11 should deal with any issues that may arise, (which is unlikely, though possible.)
