You really don't need a zoom lens for portrait work, that's one of the reasons why your camera isn't focusing properly. You want a wide angle lens.

Seriously?
A wide angle?
I think not!
I just checked, and it's not April 1st yet.

Use a wide angle if her nose is too small and if her ears are too far back.

I guess you can take a photo of anyone using any old lens you want, wide angle included. But for a classic portrait (head and shoulder) I wouldn't. But I suppose you could,,depends on the look you are going for :)

Lots of portraits are taken with a wide angle - gritty portraits of, say, a football player holding a ball out with the goal post behind him and a dramatic sky behind that. Aside from speciized portraits such as that, a wide angle lens is very, very unflattering to the subject. Telephoto lenses are the lenses of choice in portrait photography.

Your niece will have a big nose using a wide-angle lens. use telephoto. i do gave a very very talented friend who shoots beauty and always uses her 50mm 1.8.

First off, Howdy from Dallas. I am new to the forum, and wish you good luck with your portraits sessions and a happy graduation for your nieceĀ…

Couple of suggestions-

regarding focus- take a look at your camera settings, and make sure you are not deploying any facial recognition which can cause you camera to auto focus, and then check your auto focus settings,
There are buttons on the back of the camera you can use to determine when the focus is locked. Some people like to focus on the near eye, with shutter half pressed, then recompose, and then fire, but I find sometimes, when doing that, the slight change in camera angle , you can get a little drift in the focus too. I think it is better to use the button on the back of the camera- with a little practice you will get used to it.
I think you have some good choices there already for lenses. I personally like the 100mm 2.8 for portraits, it will give you some nice bokeh.

Oh, Hell, RAK, you didn't do anything wrong or offend anybody. You're getting some razzing because you've been given good answers and haven't acknowledged them. Go back and read the whole thing. If you're going to stick around here, you have to develop a little thicker skin. I've seen a user ask a question followed by five pages of excellent advice and then say, "I can't do that." Just get used to the facts that a few of us around here have combined experience of several hundred years and just might know what we're yammering on about. There are some that are better than others. four of the best are Nikonian72, MTShooter, Hal81 and CaptainC and I've going to get in trouble for leaving out a whole bunch of others. So just chill out and read carefully. These things take time!

Thanks for that I usually just offend somebody unintentionally. I will double check my typing from now on. I really respect MT Shooters info he seems to know what is going on. Thanks for the back up. Just didn't want to get ousted for a typo I really like this forum.

I got suspended for doing a helluva lot worse than that, but eventually was reinstated. ADMIN is fair. Don't sweat the small stuff - and it's all small stuff.

Hey did you notice Peter Hurley sounded like he was saying "Hedgehog" when he meant "Headshot". See how much influence our group has :?:

OK, so it was a typo,,,fair enough. I just didn't expect to be directed to a site related to porn and such on a photography website. I asked admin to remove the post, not kick the OP off. I just didn't think it was "cool" at all. Copy and paste or double check the link before posting in the future. No biggie.
