I recommend Yankee Boy Basin, the Aspen/Snowmass area and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

A lot of good suggestions. To start in North Carolina, go to Grandfather Mt on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I have been to all the spots suggested and Grandfather Mt still blew me away. Forget the Smokies, no overlooks much and its usually clouded over. The Blue Ridge Parkway between Grandfather Mt and the Smokies is like being in heaven, one overlook after another as you drive along the tops of the highest mountains.

I am planning a trip across the country, from North Carolina to California and would like suggestions for great places to stop for photography. Four of us are traveling together, taking 6 weeks, leaving in early May via a northern route to begin with and returning via a southerly route. Any ideas. We are very interested in National Parks, historic areas and great landscape, any help would be appreciated. We are just going to raom, no set itenary.

I can't believe no one mentioned Glaser National Park in Montana. "Going to the Sun Road" is among the most beautiful and spectacular roads in the U. S. Oops - I see your going in early May. That road won't be open yet. Could be true of some of the other places mentioned. You might consider going via the southern route and returning via the northern route. Even then, some of the best park roads may not yet be open.

You can't go wrong with any of our national Parks.

Depends on how far north the planned "northerly route" is. I agree with all of the suggestions about Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite etc. What's missing is the entire Northwestern US- Montana( Glacier NP-The "Going-To-The Sun" drive is arguably the most beautiful drive in North America;Waterton Lake NP ;the National Bison Reserve; the many ghost towns-Bannack, Virginia City etc), Idaho; Washington(Mt. Rainier NP , Olympic NP,Mt St. Helens,Mt. Hood, the Columbia River Gorge,Seattle-a great city); Oregon(Crater Lake NP,the entire coastline, Portland_another great small city); northern California(Redwood NP, Mt Shasta, the entire coastline to Point Reyes Nat. Seashore. Hell, I used up your 6 weeks and you have just barely gotten to California. You need another 6 weeks to do the southern route .

Let's face reality. A cross country, blue highway, National Park, small town, bridges of Madison County tour is a great fun thing to do, but if you are open minded enough you can find wonderful things to photograph in your own back yard.

(Especially if you live in California :-)

If you're going the southern PCH route it would be a shame to miss Pt. Lobos, south of Carmel, north of Big Sur.

there are a couple of books I would sugest National geographics guide to the National Parks of the USA.and Readers Digest on the road USA this book tells you about places that are within 15 miles off the interstate exits.there is a book that covers the North South Routes and one for the East West Routes great books if you are doing a road trip. Also triple AAA has a ton of guide books for free if you are a member.if you are not a member and want any guide books from any State PM me and I will get you the books and maps and send them to you.If you go to Zion or Bryce Canyon take the 2 or 3 hour Horseback ride through the park you will not regret it.in yoemite you can take Tioga rd out of the park to go to Bodie and if you choose to drive from Bodie to Reno it is about 140 miles.I hope you have a great trip take plenty of Mem. cards.

1. Theodore Roosevelt NP was never on my radar until I "accidentally" passed thru it... WOW.
2. Big Horn Mts. Wyoming
3. South Dakota, Custer State Park! Black Hills Institute in Hill City, SD is a must stop, SPECTACULAR fossils, example: real T-REX skulls great you, 8 when we went! Near Spearfish Canyon...
4. Be sure, make that positive, you go thru the Northeast entrance to Yellowstone, thru the Beartooth Mts. It is the most spectacular way into Yellowstone!
5. Yellowstone: visit the Paint Pots, and Porcelain Basin, and the boardwalks surrounding Old Faithful... oh, so much here!
6. Glacier and Waterton NPs
7. Crater Lake
8. Mt. Lassen
9. AZ and UT
10. Colorado between Denver and Salida. Cottonwood Pass. Great Sand Dunes NP.
PS Around western ND and eastern Mont.(oil has booked up); and around Yellowstone get motel reservations in advance...

If your are a senior, you can buy a lifetime pass to all the national parks for about $25. I have used mine a lot. Lets you in free except for parking at Mt Rushmore.

The lifetime pass for seniors costs only $10.00. Also, it is good for all in your vehicle. I can't recall the required age? I have had mine for a few years.

Let's face it. This is a beautiful country. There is no way to adequately cover it photographically in 6 years. All of these suggestions have been great, and this thread could go on for 500+ pages!

East of Yosemite is Mono lake and Ghost town of Bodie. Often rated in top ten places in US to photograph. Mono lake visiters center offers evening walks that are great. Mammouth Mt. is close and you can ride the tram to the top for great vista's. The court house and old school house at Bridgeport are neat also. Death Valley has great photo locations.

I live in east Sonora, just off of the Sonora Pass highway and about an hour north of Yosemite. Be advised that the Sonora Pass and Tioga Pass may or may not be open in May. Often these high passes do not open until well into June, and a few years back they didn't open until 4th of July due to heavy snows and a harsh winter. If these two passes are not available to you (check ahead), Carson Pass to the north should be open (Minden, NV - Jackson, CA).

That's Harvey's country; check with him for conditions.

Although you will be near heaven in Rocky Mountain Park and you will look back eons before life in the Grand Canyon grandeur, you will find perfect images every time your heart stops to look. Hope you also find the best arch in Utah and a sublime lighthouse in Oregon.
