I used Magix14 and Windows XP to edit my video. But it does not work on Windows 7. (Or is there a fix I don't know?) I have found it very good but also very user unfriendly. I have been looking at Sony, Pinnacle Studio, Adobe and the newer versions of Magix.
One concern is that after having learned Magix (and its numerous "mousetraps" ) I don't especially want to have to learn a new program. Magix and I have settled into a quarrelsome yet workable relationship. I have looked at a few free programs but they do not have the extra features I want.
Any thoughts/suggestions?
It may depend on where your footage comes from. You didn't say.
If you are using newer cameras that record in AVCHD (1080p) you may need newer software. Full support of AVCHD did not arrive in video software until the latest versions that are less than a year old. From my reading I think the two leaders in under $100 versions are Adobe Premier Elements 11 and Sony Vegas Home Studio 12.
My personal favorite is Adobe because of the vast supply of training and its vast array of tool and controls.
It is truly entertaining for me to learn something new. There is a free and good 8 part video short course at muvipix.com and, for $25, you can take a very good long course at lynda.com.

I have just purchased Cyberlink Power Director 11, there are various editions of it depending on what price and optuions you wish to have. It is creting slideshows using photographs and also for using video. Don't know if this is the type of program you wish to use or if it will do what you want it to, but at least check it out on the Cyberlink website.
