Is this the best I can Expect

I have a Nikon D7000 and a new Tamron 70-300. I took this photo on a rainy day at about 10 feet away. Hand held, ISO 800, 405mm f/9.5, 1/350s, 25% crop. Is this about as clear as I can expect from this lens? Any other suggestions? This was in the manual mode. Appreciate any help.

Looks sharp to me. I'm viewing this on an iPad so I may be missing something your foreground looks sharp to me- s it the DOF you are concerned about.

eralph, It looks pretty sharp to me at the point of focus even with initial jpeg compression and UHH's further compression. Look at the edge of the leaf, you can see the fine "hairs". Depending on you settings your camera may try to improve it a bit and post processing software can improve on it but those things are not a product of you lens but your camera (as with all digital cameras).

If you are referring to the lack of depth of field that has more to do with your f-stop and the intent of the lens. That is, this lens was optomized for telephoto shots, presumably of things far away. For insects and shorter macro lens is will have more dof capability but will suck at telephoto work.

If you post the image so it can be "downloaded" probably some folks here will be willing to show off their post processing sharpening skills.

Hope that helps a little.

I think it would have been a better shot with a darker background. With the white flowers and the white background, there isn't much contrast. I know it's hard to pick your background when your shooting outside.

Without seeing an enlarged picture, There is no way I can tell if this is the best you can get. But what i see here is not bad at all.

Is this the version with VC?? If so, use to own it, it was like Jekyl & Hyde. Some images came out wonderful, others not so much. I sold it and used the $ to get a 100mm f2.8 macro. The VC was amazing!!

I agree, I was just testing out my camera for the first time with this lens and wasn't worried about contrast. But I will remember that when I get serious about my next photo's
Thanks
