Bret, you forgot about your Red Headed volunteer model, and that some of those snowflakes were snowballs 'in training'.

Nice shot of the puppy.

Rey putting a speedlight 90 degrees from the camera that way it illuminates the snow from the most contrasty angle as opposed to head on (I.e. on-camera).

I have tried everything. How do you take a picture where you can see the snow falling?

Theses were taken with a fairly fast SS and a f2.8 setting. No flash, cropped pretty heavy. Is this what you want?

I cheat - don't know what camera you have but for stopping things in motion I use the sports setting and no flash. Works great for me.

I set my apature on or close to f5.4 and turned on flash to kind of freeze the snow fall.

I shot this willow tree yesterday from inside my front door. We had up to 50mph winds and the snow was blowing sideways! I tried f/11 at 1/250 with 200 iso and @3sec delay manual focus. this is what i got.

Well, if you want to practice, it will be snowing in the Denver area Saturday!
We are expecting about 9".

Judging from the view outside my window in the Denver area I would up the estimate of snow to be more than a foot. Think I will practice with some of the suggestions on this post. Good timing. Thanks for posting the question.

Like others said, use a flash. A flash will freeze the motion.
If your looking to capture the streaks of falling snow, you'll have to experiment with shutter speeds as the proper speed will be dependent on the intensity of the snowfall. Sometimes its almost not snowing & other times its snowing at 6"/hour. I prefer the latter.

Catch the next flight out of CT and hurry over here to Denver as fast as possible. It's snowing as we speak. You can't miss it. You may have to hone the skill of panning down there in CT but here all you have to do is look out the window. :)
