I just bought a brand new Nikon 50mm 1.8D lens. I want to know if anyone else has this lens. The reason I ask is the lens slightly rattles when shaken and the barrel has play in it. Ken Rockwell also commented the lens has a slight rattle so maybe this is normal. Is it normal for the lens barrel to be slightly loose? The lens seems to work and takes crystal clear photos.
Always worried about something .... LOL
My copy of this lens is the same. Slight rattle a little bit of looseness.
Great lens though. So sharp it hurts.
Thanks for the reply! Yes, the lens is amazingly sharp!
Killer lens but mine rattles also ,doesn't seem to affect photos

It's a cheap lens. The Canon is the same way. Now having said that, the glass is very good. I always advise people to have either the nikon or canon lens in their bag.
So, anybody buying the lens should shake before buying, and keep shaking until they get one that doesn't rattle. I got lucky I guess. Still, great price for a prime lens. A sharp picture with what computers can do to enlarge the image makes this a great buy ratttle or not.

No rattle here, except when I shake my head.
If you've got tinnitus, then it's shake, rattle, and hum.
My 58mm f1.4 Nikkor has rattled since 1964. Its the best lens I've ever owned.
I got my off ebay for $100 earlier this year and no rattle.
Sounds like a quality control issue.
