thank you so much! BU
BU,
You have received several replies to answer your initial question, the problem with acronyms is the way writers use them in their documentation. Writers these days seem to like to use "Text Speak" as a shorthand method of writing.
If the document is short spell out the whole word, or phrase. If the document is long and involved then spell out the first use of the word, or phrase and follow with the acronym in parentheses.
Example: One of the more creative tools in digital photography is High Dynamic Range (HDR), this uses three or more bracketed exposures in camera, and then Post Processing (PP) software to combine the 3 exposures into one final product.
HDR allows a well balanced exposure between the brighter elements and the darker elements of the scene. HDR can be taken well beyond normal scene capture by adjusting more, or less contrast and chroma in the scene. After the exposures have been merged into the final product and saved in an image format, PP can be used to enhance the image.
Using acronyms only is the "Lazy" persons way of writing, weather it may be support, or technical material.
Jargon, is very important. It makes us look smart, by not letting others know what we are talking about.
Hearrrrres somemore Definitions
VC - Vibration Compensation
SP - Super Performance
LD - Low Dispersion
ASL- Asperical
IF - Internal Focusing
OM - Ozzie Morrow (Opps! Too Much Info:))

God Bless you SIR! We would all be better off if the kings of geekdom and their millions of wannabe minions would stop this constant attempt at shortcutting technical language. It was bad enough in the military world but with the advent of the computer world it is completely out of control.
And while I'm on a rant...I'd really like to see some international standard in what constitutes a password...or as I like to call them...secret decoder ring numbers. If there was a standard we could all have ONE and be done with it.
Don't know who built yer camera! BUT!!!!!!!!!! I'll bet it came with an owner's manual, meant to be read. Every one of the acronyms, you listed, was in my owner's manual with something helpful entitled, "definition."
That being said, I must give you some slack, based upon the snobs and aesthetic wannabee pros you may trip over in this hobby.
One word of advice, if I may---when someone throws a smart a-- statement at you, you have my permission to stop them and ask what does that mean? Betcha, many times, they'll puff up like an incumbant senator and fumpher the answer.
We all started at the beginning and none of us has reached the end of the road, yet!.............CTP
There are no dumb questions.....but a lot of stupid answers sometimes!
Yes...I make a habit of asking "dumb" questions...even when I sometimes know the answers. It helps me sort out the people who I actually "listen" to. Currently, I am really irritated with the myriad of acronyms constantly used and misused in the digital video world. Anyone who can possibly keep track of, understand, decipher all those formats and how they are used...clearly owns too many pocket pencil protectors.....
Actually, the word 'acronym" is being used incorrectly in this thread. An acronym is a word that is created usually from the initial letters of an expression or phrase. Examples are: NATO for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, SONAR for sound detecting and ranging, etc. FBI, HDR, PP, UV, CIA, etc. are not acronyms, but merely abbreviations for terms or phrases. Actually saying the letters outloud indicates that these are just that and not an acronym.
Don't mean to be pedantic, but as a retired instructor in writing, journalism and photography I did want to clear up the misnomer.

If I may disagree. There are dumb questions.
The only dumb questions are those that are not asked.

Duh. Yeah, Ultrasonic Motor is what I meant to write.
If they are not asked, how can it be a question?
Thanks, hccfred! This was extremely helpful to me, too. It actually answered a question I was going to Google--now I don't have to--appreciate it much!!

Here is a handout page I use when doing "How To Use a Digital Camera" lecture. It is by no means complete but it might help. Excuse the typing.
