Testing on the 70-200 F2.8 on a D4 and a D800 we found autofocus worked in good light well beyond the advertised F8 limit.
A 2X converter will take the F2.8 max aperture to F5.6. How did you test at F8 max aperture? Did you use 2 teleconverters stacked? This statement makes no sense.
Your right; the aperture blades are held open until the exposure is made so on the 2.8 the aperture used to set the autofocus is f5.6. I should have said that the autofocus worked well using an old manual aperture lens we were playing with.
This is a no brainer folks - as has already been said, the Nikon 80-400 is very old now. The 2X will work very nicely especially if you are on crop frame ( which you have not said )Newer technology lenses work very nicely with newer technology converters. Any image deterioration from a converter shows up mostly in the perifery of the image, and if you are on crop frame, you will not see much - IF ANY ! All those who dispute this, I invite to my website
http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/larry-nieland.html where in the description I tell what lenses were used for the image. I use proudly use converters for 95% of what I do !
Again thank you for your inputs they were great!! In answer to a few questions, I'll be shooting a Nikkor 70-200mm, F/2.8 on a D700. I'll be going to a near by bird sanctuary to practice with the 2x (nikon) teleconverter.I purchased this morning.....wish me luck...:-)

I own the Sigma 70-200 2.8. Should I use a Sigma or Nikon tc with my d5100? 1.4 or 2? Thank you,Ken
I just recently sold my 80-400 and purchased the 2X converter. the picture quality of the 70-200 with the TC is comparable to the 80-400, you get 2.8 out to 200mm and 5.6 from 201 140-400mm which is the same as the 80-400, and with the TC, by camera bag is a lot lighter!!!

Personally, I would use a Tamron SP 2X if it couples properly.. But if you have lots of money, ultimately the Nikon may be the best if it is the very latest version . There also, is no reason not to use the Sigma.

I would use the Sigma 1.4X but checked on their web site to see if it will fit. Is it this lens?
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/product/apo-70-200mm-f28-ex-dg-os-hsmIf so it looks like it will fit and maintain AF.
Sigma TC's are dedicated, meaning they only fit some of their lenses like the Canons.
