my 1972 minolta SRT is still a viable platform, all manual all the time, This thing is a brick with a lens. Indestructible, Still takes gorgeous images.
No reason to think the D-DLR is going anywhere, Market drives supply.

How many DSLRs can you set f/stop via aperture ring and shutter speed by a dial?
This camera, though rangefinder 'style', feels more like my old Nikon F than anything going.
Don't need no dang mirror.

I have come to realize I have become a snapshooter. I admit it and proud of it.
A 'street' photographer of sorts. More a window shopper. A day tripper.
Most of my photo ops are when out with friends, family, groups (even tours). A whole lot of grab and go.

So will the DSLR cameras soon be a thing of the past?

I was looking at the B & H photo web site at there are lots of Nikon mirror less cameras listed - some for over $1000.00.

Some are quite small and look like a point and shoot camera.

Any thoughts?

In my opinion mirrorless cameras are a ploy to reach that group of "snappers" who have no interest in learning anything serious about photography but want to "brag" about how they can change lenses and look cool doing it. This group, I believe, is where the "snappers" money is and that's what the majors (Canon and Nikon) are betting on.

Snappers are those who only want to hold the camera 2-feet from their face and don't care how really stupid they look doing it. Mirrorless cameras then are way over rated and way over priced pocket toys, without view finders that happen to change lenses.

I believe that us folks who are serious about photography, be it hobby, semi-pro or professional wouldn't be caught using such a pocket toy on a professional job. If you're going to be a professional, use a pro camera.
If you're going to be a snapper then hey, a pocket toy works just fine.

Point is the majors are just trying another way to market products that they think might hit a nerve of a certain group - the "snappers".

Just an opinion.

The reason for a camera having a mirror is to allow the photographer to have a viewfinder with the image seen by the lens. This means that the sensor must be way back to allow room for the mirror and this in turn means physically larger lens. Electronic viewfinders are now improving and getting close to the image seen through the optical viewfinder.

The lens for a mirrror-less camera has the lens closer to the sensor and for a given focal length and aperture, is physically smaller. This in turn means that along with the new high-performance sensors, electronic viewfinders and the new lens being currently patented - they can have performance equal to the highest quality professional DSLR cameras without the weight and size ( and cost ).

If you watch the news, especially the new lens patents, you can see the major camera makers are moving in this direction as fast as possible so as to not be left behind.

at this time i only see two advantages with a mirrorless camera.
1 faster lock time.
2 no mirror vibration.

Film Dinosaur hit it exactly on the head, and to be able to follow that routine, I'm happy I'm using only the EM5 and the EP3 now....My Grandchildren are LOVING all my Nikon Gear I parcelled out to them when I switched to Mirrorless, and I'm pleased it's all going to good use..

According to the earlier logic. You are a snapshooter if you aren't using a view camera or medium format slr. Was Henri Cartier-Bresson a snapshooter.

I believe if you'll do the research, all of the founding members of Magnum were "snappers". How did they become so successful? LOL
