turning off my camera in its current settings

Okay, I am sure this is a silly question, when I am shooting in TV & AV, it worries me to leave my lens sticking out when I put my camera away, is there a proper way to put it back without switching back to Manual and doing it?

I don't think a silly question at all as I sometimes had been turning the focusing part of my lens slightly to fit into bag better and then I read how you shouldn't do that when in auto.

It's not the shooting mode (Av, Tv), though; it's how you last used the focus. What camera do you have? I will be interested in other posts to your question.

I always put it back in manual then pull the lens back in, seems like there should be a easier safer way

the focusing ring is still projected out, just wondering if it was okay to store in the case with it still out instead of flesh with the zoom ring

Switch the lens to manual and retract the lens. Then switch it back to auto so you wont forget to do it when you use the camera.

Never thought about it. I have always just turned the camera off and manually retracted the lens....Is this supposed to cause problems?

I shoot a Canon T3i. If the lens is in auto-focus mode, I just put the lens cap on and press the shutter release half way to "focus" on the back of the cap. The front element will retract.

If you mean, "Should I put my camera away with the lens zoomed out?", the answer is no. Unless you have internal zooming, you are exposing the lens barrel to dust and moisture. Retract the lens and replace the lens cap. Also engage the zoom lock if you have one.

It sounds like you are shooting bridge or P&S cameras. Few DSLR lenses retract automatically. The T3 is a DSLR.

If I don't remove my lens when stowing my camera (which rarely happens), I will always retract the lens barrel, and make sure the AF (Auto Focus) is set to on preventing the barrel from creeping out during transit.

Is it sticking out from focusing or zooming. Zooming makes a big difference in lens length, and I keep mine pulled back. I don't recall much of an extension from focusing, but you don't want to work against the autofocus, so turning it off is a good idea.
