Partly cloudy picture taken between clouds. Taken with Nikon D90 and 80-400 nikon with no filter and tripod 1/100 iSO 200 f5.6 at 400 mm. Any recomendations or ideas for other things to try for a better picture.

I would try a longer shutter duration not knowing what you set for.

Hi Greg. What were your settings? And what is your white balance
set at. Looks too blue. But you are very close to getting a great shot. I played with your shot and did a few adjustments.

Try ISO 200, F8. start at 1/325 second adjust speed up or down slightly from that. Using that slow a shutter speed you get more camera movement and your pictures are not as clear use tripod and turn off VC. Use remote release with delay if available.

Greg, I think your shot is good. Just needs a bit more PP. I converted to Gray Scale and did a little Brightness & Contrast Adjustment with some sharpening. Here's the result. Its better than anything I ever shot. -- Gene

Erv I don't remember and it didn't record in the photo properties, it was set on manual but what it was on I don't know. Do you recommend Auto? The other settings are included with the photo except I forgot to mention +2.3 exposre. It is cloudy again tonight, worse than last night and I am back in the ST Paul area so more light polution to deal with also.

Thanks Gene, the touchup looks good also that you did. I will have to play with my settings more as Erv mentioned and see next time I get a clear night to shoot some more pics.

229000 miles away, you could try to get closer!
oh sorry.
Nice work, there are inexpensive 500 and 650mm fixed f/8 lenses you can use to get killer shots, 650 with 2x 1300mm.
on tripod with Mirror lock up and timer poroduces great frame filling shots.
Might find used on ebay. aint much good for action

Thanks for the recomendations Bruce, my shuttle is in the shop so I will have to try a longer lens and or a teleconvertor. Sure is fun to try for these shots. I lived in Smithtown for a year and a half. Loved the Island and miss the scuba diving and sailing that I did there. I don't miss the 2 and a half hour drive into Manhattan and home each way for work though.
